I wish that you'd let us know, since someone here would have surely been willing to sponsor you, even if you didn't mention the dogs. How many do you have and what kind are they? I have two dogs, myself, though have recently been helping to care for a third. Congrats on your star and give your pups a pat for me! And I seriously doubt that you're crazy, since you belong to DU.:D

15. Hey Rhiannon,
Don't worry anout the dogs it's a treat for them. I normally don't feed them scraps, but we always have plenty of left overs which generally go to my piggies.

I have 3 right now. 1 Boxer bitch, and 2 mixed Boxer/Amstaff's. The Boxer is fawn and white, and 1 pup is full red brindle, the other is a red brindle with white socks, and a white neck.

Thanks R, but my psycologist would disagree.

16. Your dogs sound beautiful! Thanks! Pix? LOL!
Just be careful about abruptly changing their diet, since that can lead to intestinal distress. But I know what you mean that it's a treat for them. My guys want whatever I'm eating, and my little guy, pictured in my sig, is a real nut for pizza, LOL! My friend feeds her three dogs leftovers, like mashed potatoes, which was a new one on me, but they seem to enjoy it. My vet says I should give them certain veggies, but only the little one will eat them, believe it or not... He's even had me cook for them, when they've been unwell.:-)

So your psychologist thinks you're crazy? What is he doing about it? As for the hillbilly part, you've got me swinging. I live in NY, so I'm completely clueless, except for what I've read. Care to explain?

18. Thank you!!!
In the meantime, here are mine, Meneken and Sara. I adopt older dogs, from rescue, so Meneken is now 12 and Sara is 10, both great dogs who fell on hard times. Meneken's owner died and nobody would take him and Sara was found as a stray in Ohio, where they still gas unwanted animals. But both of them found me, and I consider myself very fortunate.:D

Meneken

Meneken and Sheena (I lost her two years ago, and he loved her so much, which is the reason I adoipted Sara.)

25. I've had dogs for most of my life, seven in all, which may seem like a lot
for my age, but I adopt older dogs from rescue. My breed is cocker spaniels, and both of these were supposed to be cockers, LOL! I called about an 8-year-old cocker when I found Meneken, but he'd been adopted, and my friend in rescue told me about another little dog that was in real trouble. That was my tiny Brussels Griffon. And another person, in rescue, called me about another cocker, but the person who was fostering decided to keep her, so she offered me Sara. I've never been sorry, since the best dogs have found me, though two of my cockers had seizures, but you deal with what you have to. And I'm lucky to have found an amazing vet.:-)

Here's my Barney, who I lost in November of 2002. I adopted him at age 10 or 11, and I had him for eight years, He was the best dog I have ever known, and the reason I adopt older animals. I've also had three cats, but I lost my last cat, who I rescued myself, last year.;(

29. Thats great!
I tend to rescue a few myself. The Boxer lady "Roxy" is a 9, we got her from the pound when she was 6. The 2 pups are pretty much rescue dogs as well. Their momma died in an ice storm we had a few weeks ago. My sister in law called and told me that they were almost dead, starved and half froze. I went and got them, and me and my daughter brought them through.

35. What a sad, but lovely, story. Your dogs are very lucky to have found you
and they are pretty adorable, besides. When I lost my Barney, my neighbor suggested that I get a puppy, but I told her that everyone loves puppies, but who would take an eight-year-old dog with seizures? I've adopted two cockers with seizures, though I didn't know it, until I had them. Taking older dogs is always a crap shoot, but I've never been sorry, and, obviously, neither have you. Kudos.:D

As for your children, they aren't only awfully cute, but are being taught, by example, to love animals. I learned from my Dad, since my mother's Polish, and is not a person who embraces pets. It's amazing what we learn from our parents. Your children are fortunate to have you, as well, especially the daughter who helped you rescue your dog. She will remember this, always, I'm sure, just as I will remember my father's many acts of kindness towards animals.:-)

38. I find that really caring.
That you would choose a sick dog. Tells a lot about you and your character. Cockers are known for seizures are they not?

Well i hope to instill in them some compassion that was lacking in my growing up. I saw little kindness due to circumstances, and hence became a very hard person. I don't want my childeren to grow up and have the same non caring attitude i had when i was a younger man.

48. Certain breeds are more likely to have seizures. I know that now.
My first two dogs had none of the reputed cocker problems, were pretty perfect, but my third dog, my little Samantha, made up for it in every way, since she had them all, in spades, ears, eyes and very severe seizures. My friend in rescue, who brought me my perfect Barney, offered to take her back when I told her, but I knew that this dog would require care, preferably from someone who loved her, and that was me. And I've never regretted it, though I lost her earlier than my other dogs, at age 12.;(

And then I adopted Sheena, who also had seizures, though I didn't learn this until I pressed the animal hospital, which adopted her out, for her medical records. But she was already my dog, as well. But what were the chances?! Two in a row?! But I've learned to deal with numerous health problems, research them on the internet, and have a brilliant vet, who educates me. I wouldn't change a thing, except for losing Sam and Sheena so soon. Sammy was 12 and I lost Sheena on her 11th birthday, despite fighting her illness with everything my vet could muster. My two previous dogs passed their 18th birthdays.;(

As for your kids, you're setting a great example. My Dad is the reason I love animals. He even loved my rat, who I brought home from college. He was my lab rat, in Experimental Psych, and was destined to be "recycled" to biology. He was very smart and my graphs came out so well, that I got a very good grade, thanks to him. So I couldn't let anything happen to him, and brought him home. My Dad liked him a lot.:D

55. I had to spread out a ton of dough on my last male Boxer.
He was a great fellow and a hero. He actually saved on of my kids lives. I spent over $500 a month for a few years on medicine and special diet food too keep him around. Sad part is at the ripe age of 15 he was hit by a dummy speeding down my driveway(it's 1/2 a mile long). I almost commited murder that day.

Besides Tiger(the Boxer male) we lost our Lady. She was a chow fiest mix. A wonderful little dog. She just disappeared on us after 9yrs. Thats the worst because i worried about her so long. We resuced her from and ad placed in the local paper.

I do my best. I try to do better than my real dad did for me, which was nothing. He kidnapped my sister and impregnated her when i was very young. I always wished i would have had a great dad instead of the asshat i got. My kids benifit though, as it makes me strive to be as good of a father as i can, which ain't much. ;)

66. I'm so sorry about the dogs you lost! And I sure can identity,
both with losing them and with the vet bills. Since I tend to adopt older animals, I know that they won't be with me as long and that I may be facing health problems. My little Sara, the terrier whose pic I posted, was found as a stray in Ohio, as I said, and was scheduled to be gassed. But because she was such a nice dog, she got a last-minute reprieve and was taken by a dog underground railroad (they really do call it that and it works the same way), along with 19 other dogs, from Ohio to rescue organizations in NY and Vermont, where we have stricter animal protection laws. And that's how she found me. She was about eight when I adopted her, 2 1/2 years ago, and came to me with ear infections, skin infections, kennel cough, a growth in her mouth, one on her back, both requiring surgery, and I forget what else. Needless to say, that poor dog really hates going to the vet. I took her back there, just a week ago, because one of her ears flared up again. I'm always at the vet.;(

And when my Sheena got cancer (she's the cocker pictured with my little guy), my vet threw everything he could think of at it, special diet, essential fatty acids, and I even had to brew a special anti-cancer tea for her. I was even bringing her for weekly acupuncture treatments, the third pet of mine to have that. Fortunately, I have a brilliant vet who uses both traditional and alternative treatments. I brought her to him when her seizures became worse and more frequent because I wanted to avoid putting her on an anti-convulsant, since my previous dog, who had very bad seizures, died from liver failure after being on an anti-convulsant for so long.;(

After I lost my beautiful Barney, my neighbor suggested that if I ever got another dog, I should get a puppy. But I told her that everyone loves puppies, but who would take an eight-year-old dog with seizures? I've had two. The older ones are the ones who need me. The dog that got me started on this was Barney, the best dog I'll ever know. I saw him on the pet adoption segment of my local news and his story broke my heart. He was 10 or 11, and had been a stud dog at a commercial kennel (puppy mill). When he got too old, they were just going to euthanize him, but he was rescued by a terrific woman who has become my friend and eventually placed a second dog with me. He wasn't housebroken and had never lived with people, so was considered difficult to place, and he was older. But that dog had the most wonderful temperament and he was perfect from the day I brought him home. I had him for eight years and I still miss him terribly. He's the reason I adopt older animals.:-)

Barney

As for your Dad, I am so sorry! Yikes! You did have a rough time! I was very lucky with my Dad, since he only wanted the best for me and he's the reason that I love animals. He even liked my rat, that I brought home from school, since I couldn't stand the thought of them "recycling" him to the biology dept. We had a rocky period when I was a teen-ager, but who doesn't? LOL! Unfortunately, I've since lost my father and don't even get me started on my Freeper mother! And I'm sure that your kids are enjoying the benefits of the effort that you put into trying to be a good Dad. My Dad didn't have much of an example to follow, either, since his own father died when he was still a little boy, but he made a real effort, as well, at least with me. You seem to be devoted to both your pets and your kids and they're very lucky to have you.:D

27. Thank you! They are all so cute!!!
I love tabby cats, which were always my favorites, until I took my uncle's two cats, after he died. One was a lovely grey tabby, very sweet, but reclusive, but the other one was black, an amazing little being, so I have since looked for black cats, as was my little rescue cat, who I lost last year. I am always at the vet's. *sigh*

And your dogs are also quite lovely, as I anticipated. They are fortunate to have you. What lovely faces, so I know how you must feel about them.:loveya:

As for the children, compared to dogs, really tough. But they are also extremely cute, LOL! And you are very fortunate with them, as well. Are they making music, or is Joseph in the dog's bowl?!:D

63. Seems i missed this one some how.
Sorry 'bout that. I know about diet change, and thats why they will be restricted to the outside for the week ;)

Actually i don't go see my psycologist any more. He liked to play games, and i was actually getting the best of him in said games most of the time lol!

A hillbilly is often a reference to someone like myself who's a native of the deep Appalachian mountains. Primarily Kentucky, West by god Virginia, Virginia, Tennesee, and my homeland of North Carolina. We hillbillies have a reputation for violence, backwardness, inbreeding, whiskey making etc. Ever seen Deliverence the movie? The locals who lived along the river were stereotyped hillbillies, and not a very true representation of the true culture.

67. And I did, as well. Interesting replies...
The diet change may be a treat for the dogs, but if they are restricted to outdoors, I hope it's not cold where you are. It's been a pretty cold and stormy winter, so far, here in the NE, and my little guys go out and come right back in. I get cold, as well, waiting for them, and they have to have a spot shoveled out for them, otherwise it would just be too deep.:-(

As for your therapist, if you didn't hit it off with the one that you saw, you might want to try another one. Sometimes it takes awhile to find a good match, someone who you can relate to and feel comfortable with.:-)

I never did see "Deliverance," a bit rough for me, but I did read Catherine Marshall's book, "Christy," because I had to write about the series that they made of it which aired on CBS. I thought it was quite well-done, but, unfortunately, it didn't last long. These folks were in the mountains of Tennessee.

NC? I've spent a lot of time there, since my grandmother retired to Black Mountain, near Asheville, in the Western part of the state, not far from Tennessee. It's beautiful country, near the Blue Ridge Parkway, but I don't recall seeing anybody I'd classify as hillbillies, LOL! And, somehow, I don't think you fit the stereotype that you describe, either...:-)

I can't tell you how much time I spend, each and every day, reading all the posts! I really must discipline myself more about the time I spend here! I have learned sooo much about all sorts of things. DUers are one of the smartest and most knowledgeable groups of folks I've been involved with.

I remember the excited feeling I had when I got my 'official' DU star! It opened up even more information to me, by exploring the forums, and being able to post there.

You're a hair's breadth away from 1,000 posts-- Another exciting development for you!

61. I remember when I got mine...

Ah, the memories.

Wish I had some pictures to show you, but they were seized by the cops.

Welcome!
