Ugh! My college roomie's husband is running for political office...
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 06:24 PM by huskerlaw
in Nebraska. I could seriously puke. I spent many hours wrapped in political "debates" with this guy back in college (1996-2000, so still relevant) and he doesn't know his head from his ass politically. He voted for ALAN KEYES for fuck's sake. Most of the time our debates would end with him calling me a bitch and storming out of the room.

Not exactly what we want in a state legislature. Plus, he has no experience, outside of a position on the school board of a practically non-existent school in Cheney, Nebraska. Yes, THAT Cheney. How poetic.

And here I am in California with no real way to sabotage him. Uh, I mean...oppose... ;)

On edit: I apparently don't know what state I'm in... :dunce:

1. I think you mean to say you're in California.
But...does he have an opponent? You could always assist with "research". :D

2. hahahah, woops
yes, I am definitely in California. ;)

He does have an opponent. I might call and volunteer from afar...although his opponent is probably a Repub too... meh.

3. Ugh...
Of course his opponent is probably a Republican. Even if it was a Democrat, it would probably be a DINO. :D

5. yeah, it's Lincoln
but it's SOUTH Lincoln, which skews a bit to the right. So chances are he's either a Repub or a DINO.

Though I'd take a DINO or a moderate repub over the ex-roomie's hubby any day.

9. I know what they'd be getting
and it's NOT good. I don't mean to attack him personally, but his politics SUCK.

12. Except that I'm still friends
with his wife. Who frankly would make a far better politician than he would...and he's got 2 adorable little kids. I don't want to start a nasty personal attack on the guy.

13. Maybe you could work on his wife.
Mention to her that you used to destroy him in arguments, that perhaps he needs a bit more seasoning. You know, constructive stuff like that.

That would be part of the personal attack I could launch, but won't...

I could PM you the sordid details though, if ya want, lol.

4. I actually know a Nebraska state senator
it's unicameral, as you know; they're all called senators. He serves on the Nebraska counterpart to the state agency here of which I am presently chair, so I see him at our national gatherings. A pleasant sort, he, much sought after as convenor of our sessions; sounds like he deserves better than this for a colleague.

Called you a, um, female dog, did he? I don't suppose you could whip that up into a Thomas-Hill sort of thing?

7. Yeah, the unicameral
makes it interesting. They're also supposed to be nonpartisan, but that's the biggest load of crap ever. Except that the voters don't have the crutch of a letter behind the candidates' names.

I just moved from Nebraska a few months ago, so chances are I've at least heard of your friend. :)

He did call me a bitch, but I promptly kicked him out...so no, I don't think I could yell scandal now. ;)

8. Write letters to all the papers
in the asshat's district. Tell them what you know about him.

Here's a start for contact info: http://dir.yahoo.com/News_and_Media/Newspapers/By_Region/U_S__States/Nebraska/

11. Good plan!
But my issues with him aren't easily put into a decent editorial letter. I mean, I know he can't argue a point to save his life, he treats women like inferiors, when cornered in a debate he gets unconstructively nasty...basically just that he would make a horrible politician. But how do I write that without it sounding like a personal attack? I don't have any professional examples because a) he's never held public office and b) I've never worked with him.

Plus, I don't want to start a smear campaign, I do like his wife and kids.

20. Listen to your better angels
I guess that went without saying, huh?

But if you really believe the guy's not qualified to represent a constituency or represent one fairly, I think it's your duty to let people know, one way or another.

I think you could get your point across very well without coming off as attacking with a letter describing a negative experience with him. It doesn't have to be a professional experience as long as it relates somehow to his qualifications.

O' course, if that just isn't "you" or if you don't want to risk friendships, I certainly understand. So just e-mail the city editor or a political reporter at one of those papers and give them the dish, on background.
