Original message
I hurt myself today,
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real

The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear my crown of shit
On my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
----------------------------You should hear this one when Johnny Cash sings it.---------------

1. I've heard Johnny's version.
But I go nuts over Trent's.
(Khash, where are you? He just posted some NIN lyrics!)

6. For me,
knowing what Trent was going through at the time that he wrote it, I felt it more from him. Fame, heavy amounts of drugs, alcoholism-it was his personal warning to himself that he didn't heed until years later.
Johnny did a good job of it and if anyone besides Trent had done it I would have thought Johnny's was the best version. But Trent's voice haunts me in that song.
And it helps that he's hot. I like to look at him a lot.

4. You can hear the pain in his voice, can't you?
Gave me chills.

Not as many chills as a sound paddling, though. :P

9. Cash makes me cry.....
One of the only singers who does. Briarius loves his stuff, especially this one, though.

12. Enough already!
Although I have great respect for Cash's talents and also the guts it took to cover it - this is Trent's song and no one sings it like him.

Trent made me cry.

Khash.

You know, I have never replaced an "s" with a "z" on purpose before.

I may have to damage myself now.

26. Yeah, the Bowie/Reznor duet is my favourite version...
Johnny's comes in second, and Trent's original third.

19. I think Trent Reznor is probably the second best "musician" of...
...my time. Second only to Prince. I would love for those 2 to go into the studio for about 6 months, put their collective musical genius' together, and see what emerges. I bet it would be phenominal.

21. Johnny's version is excellent but...
Trent's original brings me back to high school. The Downward Spiral really kicked ass.

I've many very tangible memories associated with that album and Pretty Hate Machine.

25. PHM was a big one for me in high school.
Disturbing memories w/ that in the background but still takes me back to high school to this day.
TDS was when I was in college. I remember quite well the first time my friend played "March of the Pigs" on the college station.
Good times.
