8. For the most part, I agree. |

I like "White Light/White Heat," and a handful of other songs, but I think they might be the second-most overrated band of all time (after the Ramones, of course.)
What you got in VU is the first example of intellectuals (Apollonians) attempting a physical, body-centered music (Dionysian rock) and failing miserably since none of them possessed an outstanding sense of rythym or even a modicum of blues in their makeup. It's significant that Joe Carducci cites them (along with Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two and Captain Beefheart's MAgic Band) as important examples of ensembles which have had lasting, profound influence on rock music, but who are non-rock themselves.
And their influence on rock has been uniformly negative, IMO. The indie rock sphere is just way too chock full of bands who took the Velvet's amplified folk-strum-noise aesthetic and ran with it, unupdated, unmodified. Everey time a new heralded hyped band comes up from the indie realm and critics need a touchstone, they cite VU.....which to many music fans simply means "they sound monochromatic, the rythym section's feeble, and can't play their instruments very well...and the singer probably sucks, too."
I'm tired of bands who sound like the Velvets.
