Well, go ahead and
give it your best shot.

I'll take my hat off.

There we are, Winger.
Ain't no more drill sergeant.

It's just you and me, kid,
man-to-man.

So go ahead, give it
your best shot.

Ask me anything.

9. short story was sold :)
you can read it at www.flashquake.org it's in the Editors Selects section of the Winter 05 issue.

I haven't updated the blog around in a long time because I've been swamped.

I made two more sales since too :)

Look for another installment of the Union Dues stories at www.escapepod.org in February.

15. I never get mod messages
Last time I had a thread locked I just had a smart ass comment on the thread that had nothing to do with what the thread was actually about.

I wish the mods would answer when I send them a PM.

16. I notice you didn't answer my question.
I also noticed that after you swore to me you were retiring - you were on the retiree list and the new mod list. Both. I thought it was a typo - now I know the truth - your'e sneaky!

19. My name comes from an episode of Mystery Science 3000
featuring South African Space Epic "Space Mutiny" the picture is of the main character David Ryder (as played by Z-grade actor Reb Brown) who, in the course of the show, is refered to by Mike and bots as several extra manly names, including, my favorite, Big McLargehuge.

I laughed so hard when I first saw it I just had to use it as a name.

As for retiring... I dunno. I wasn't here during the actual mod switch and didn't realize it happened until way late at night, so if I was on both lists it was probably a mistype that was corrected before I saw it.

22. MST3K! Is there anywhere I can buy DVDs of that show that
don't cost the better part of a hundred bucks?

I would indeed love to be able to see that again; I cannot think of ONE episode that didn't make me laugh out loud, and I only saw a few of them.

Did you know that Mike Whatsisname wrote two books as well? Amazingly enough, he's just as funny in print as he is onscreen. You should read his books.

23. I had one of them at one time, but lent it out
and it never came back. I remember laughing my ass off as I read it.

The DVD sets are expsensive. Volume 4 has Space Mutiny on it, (and The Girl in Gold Boots, Hamlet (from German TV), and Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.

It lists for about 28 bucks at Amazon

I am greatly impressed at the amazing generosity the mods have, both with their energy and their time. I'm assuming you're all doin' this outa the goodness of your hearts, right???

20. 3-5 hours
I am a telecommuter so I can have my work going on and do my mod duties at the same time. But it's total combined time of 3-5 hours a day. Less on weekends.

We are all volunteers, and moderate because we love it here.

Mine's under the desk as well; there's no way I'd have that thing howling at me from the top of my workstation.

28. Indeed, but it has aftermarket fans in it-
so it only sounds like a twin turboprop idling on the runway as opposed to a Boeing 747 throttling up for takeoff.

Dual 1.25 Gig G4, Gig of RAM. I love it.

30. Well, it's going to be my machine of choice for a while, because I'm
a Sytstem 9 holdout. Workflow is paramount for me. I have two more of them, new in boxes, for when this one wears out.

Then, I quit. I don't have the time or the patience to deal with all the aggro of X. Command lines, my ass. And who'd have thought that we Mac people would end up having our very own "blue screen of death?" Or have to buy software just to back up our system? I throw everything onto two external drives twice a day, and I'm all set.

31. I run in OS X 99% of the time
but I am no power user. You can still drag and backup with external drives, like in OS 9 they show up on the desktop as HDs. I back my writing up that way every week. I also throw it onto a CDRW in case of multiple HD failures. Drag - drop - burn. As for backing up an entire drive, you can do it with the Disk Copy utility. It's simple enough once you get the hang of it, but not as simple as OS 9.

I have only played around with the command line on rarest of occasions, so I am not really sure what I'd get from it.

Nice to know there's another Mac head here :)

32. It's pragmatic for me. I need to be working within 5 minutes of
turning on the computer. I need consistency and reliability.

I did FORTRAN II programming in 1969 and 1970, and swore I'd never use a computer again until it could do the grunt work by itself...then started an ad agency in 1992, and HAD to use a Mac, and was happy to find that it worked the way I thought computers should, those many years ago.

I'm typing this on a 1998 G3 Powerbook, by the way (though I have newer TiBooks)...how many Wintel people, do you suppose, have seven-year-old laptops that still work?
