"Would you mind spending a few minutes petting my dog?"
I was rushing from one job to the other yesterday. A woman was walking her dog on the lawn of my office. She was about 20-30 feet away from me, and I didn't say anything to her.

She hurried after me, and called out to stop me. I stopped, and turned to face her. She asked if I would mind spending a few minutes petting her dog. I declined, because I was in a hurry.

I felt it was a rather odd request. I grew up with dogs, and they often made friends with strangers. Never do I recall asking anyone to stop to pet them.

5. Maybe she thought you were a "dog person"
Maybe the dog seemed to like you, she noticed it, and wanted her dog to have some time with you.

I pet every dog I see, if the owner seems inclined to allow it. However, "a few minutes" is an odd request. Maybe she got embarrassed and mixed up what she wanted to say.

8. I am a dog person, and usually will pet a dog.
And I think the dog did want to meet me. But I was clearly in a hurry. We weren't that close, and I had already passed her. I actually think I was giving off a 'don't talk to me vibe.' It was rainy and windy. I had my hood up, and my head down and I was making a beeline for the parking lot.

13. "Maybe some other time ..." and a friendly wave good-bye.
Can't go back and do it over, but I'm wondering if you'll see her again the next time you're out that way.

BTW, "don't talk to me" vibes don't always work. Sometimes they have exactly the opposite effect. :7

15. I was polite when I declined.
I've never seen anyone walking out that way except for fellow employees on their way to or from the parking lot.

16. Then it's a one-time thing, hopefully.
I didn't mean to imply you weren't polite. I know what's it like to be detained when there's little time to spare. Maybe it's a good thing you went on your way. A person never knows what another person might be thinking ...

9. Other than the obvious, expertly handled up-thread, I gotta believe that..
...this was just a come-on of some sort.

"Pet my dog."

(pet pet)

"HAVE YOU ACCEPTED CHRIST??" or Amway or Pampered Chef or Rightards for Everyone Die Now or whatever. Walking on was the only correct choice.

11. Out by the airport actually

It seemed like a very odd place to walk a dog. No one lives out there.
