69. This:
http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=4903

Thurman said his interceptions have come from “preparation meeting opportunity. I’ve been lucky with those.” He knows his rep as a run player, but he disagrees with Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger that Thurman’s hit on his knees Sunday was a cheap shot. Thurman got flagged 15 yards for hitting him as he threw the ball. Lewis and Thurman insist an offensive lineman tripped him into Roethlisberger.

“That’s his opinion. If he thinks it’s a cheap shot, I’m not going to throw anything back at him,” Thurman said. “I get enough chances to hit people in the mouth that I don’t have to take a cheap shot.”

25. Yeah your so right!
From espn:

Several Bengals yelled at von Oelhoffen, who spent his first six seasons in Cincinnati and still counts some of the Bengals as friends.

"Guys were infuriated," right tackle Willie Anderson said. "But I know him. He's not a dirty player. His momentum just kept him going into Carson. It wasn't a dirty play."

The nose tackle explained himself on the field.

"They had every right to be upset. They lost their best player," he said. "I hope Carson gets better. My apologies to him and his family.

"I was worried about Carson. That kid deserved to play this game."

33. Really?
I'm sure Palmer would've done a better job snapping the ball for that FG. And he wouldn't have been fooled by the "flea-flicker" play--he would've stayed with Wilson and, at the very least, knocked the ball down. And instead of diving out of the way of The Bus, he would've planted him. Not to mention the Willie Parker run--Palmer would've taken a better angle and pushed him out of bounds before he scored, holding them to a field goal try (which he would've then blocked and returned for a TD).

65. this is a good point
The sports world likes to fit dramatic events into simple narratives. For this game, everyone wants to say, "If only Palmer hadn't been injured, the Bengals would have won." But this ignores a lot of what happened:

*Palmer couldn't have stopped the Steelers offense, as you say.
*Kitna actually performed pretty well in the first half. Sure, he folded in the second half, but Palmer, who has considerably less football experience than Kitna, might well have done the same.

It's not fair to the other few dozen players in the game to make this all about Carson Palmer.

Clearly, when he blocked KVO, Kimo was headed to the ground and did the same thing any of us would do, and put his arms out to break his fall. If you seen KVO's face after the play on replay, you can tell he was concerned.

Von Oelhoffen was clearly upset when he saw Palmer was hurt. It wasn't intentional. But all I gotta say is, the game would've been different if Palmer played the whole game. Yeah, our defense still gave up the points, but we could've outscored them. Plus, the psychological blow of your Pro Bowl starting QB going down in the first offensive series of the game was probably too much for an inexperienced playoff team. The Bengals will be back.

Oh, and living in Indiana, I've grown to like the Colts a little bit. So I'll be looking forward to them kicking the shit out of the Steelers next week. It'll be sweet. :)

29. They're questioning Kimo on that play?
I thought it was obvious he was being blocked and he rolled into Palmer's leg. Sucked for Bengals fans but I've seen it happen a million times before in football, although not always with the results that happened to Carson.

I'd hate for it to turn into some inane "he did it on purpose" debate between Bengals and Steelers fans when even the CBS announcers (who sounded like they were going to burst into tears) said it was just a freak accident.

34. It was a tragic accident
Edited on Sun Jan-08-06 11:13 PM by chookie
I was rooting for the Steelers, but I was devastated when Palmer was injured. From my viewing of the replays of the KVO hit, I have to concur with the opinion that it was simply a regretable accident. How I wish it did not happen, and it seemed KVO felt the same way. It was sad to see this talented young man get injured in such a fateful game; that being said, it was not an intentional hit.

The Bengals played very well in the first half, and they should be proud of their second QB as well as the rest of the team. But the Steelers won the second half -- they played better.

Congraulations to Cinncinati for a great year, and wishing them all the best for the recovery of their star quarterback so we'll have another matchup next year with a healthy Palmer.

31. Steelers may lose to the Colts......
But at least they'll be there. Do you think the Bengals were the best team in the division? I think the only reason they won it was because of Ben's injury and Tommy Maddox's suckness. They have no run defense. When they get one, they'll be O.K.

In the meantime, Chad Johnson can melt his gold teeth into a Super Bowl trophy and place it in his fantasy world (the same one where the Bengals would be on top for a while).

I don't really hate the Bengals (and I liked Chad's Riverdance) but they were talking a lot of shit and then they ate it.

38. Good point
If Ben had not been injured, and that sorry excuse for a QB Maddox not replaced him, the Steelers would have had a better season.

The Bengals are a great team, which suffered the worst luck in the world tonight -- I'm a Steeler fan but I appreciate their accomplishments, but the record of the Steelers this year was diminished by the temporary loss of our own star QB Ben.

The Colts are FANTASTIC! If the Steelers do not play well against them, they will lose miserably.

Oy yeh -- who then has to go against the Patriots? Now they are simply amazing -- they are not flashy but are smart as heck. They will give the red ass to who ever faces them in the Super Bowl. My thinking, it's going to be the Colts vs Patriots in the Super Bowl -- and that is going to be one hell of a game.

86. Sorry, but...
...am I not allowed to dislike division rivals? I admit, I used to despise the Ravens much more than the Steelers, but seeing as how the Ravens blow as of late, the hatred faded a bit and just transferred over to the Steelers because they're good. Should I apologize for wanting the Colts to tear them to shreds? It'll at least give me some sort of satisfaction. And nowhere in my post did I say that the Steelers were a bad team, or that the Bengals were better. I just said the game would've been different. I feel like that's a reasonable statement.

That being said, I don't disagree with you. Our defense is pure shit, and relied totally on turnovers all year. Actually, I do disagree with this: "When they get one, they'll be O.K." I think we'll be more than "O.K.", don't you? ;)

90. That's fine.
I'd wish the same thing upon the Bengals had they won. I just didn't like all the "changing of the guard" stuff after the Bengals' earlier win (esp. Chad Johnson). I do believe the Bengals will be more than O.K. with an improved run defense and the Steelers and Ravens will have their hands full with them (the Browns don't count yet). They have a lot of talent and a good coach (due to his time with the Steelers, of course). I'm not a huge Cowher fan b/c he can never get the Steelers over the top. If he devises a plan to defeat the Colts, I'll change my mind.

47. It's unfortunate some Bengals fans are such poor losers.
It's as if a QB in the NFL had never been injured by having a defensive player blocked into his legs before, it had to be a nefarious plot by a guy who played for years on that very same team.

The Bengals had a great season, it's a shame some of their fans have to try to ruin it with horrible accusations.

The lineman in the god-awful Bengals uniform blocking Kimo into the QB? He didn't dive head first, he was tossed aside and his momentum took him into Palmer's path.

Would someone express the concern he did after the play if it was a cheap shot? Hell, haven't you ever seen someone (QBs and O-linemen both) get their knees rolled up on because someone was blocked into them? It sucks, but it happens in football.

Besides, even if you insist it was a cheap shot, the Bengals were still winning until they snapped that potential field goal over the holder's head. That turned the game around more than losing Palmer.

55. I've played footbal and watched football about all my life
I've blocked people into others and been blocked into others and everytime when it happens the player being blocked either collides into the other player with his side or back. I find it so coincidental that the player who's proven he could single handedly beat teams (including the Steelers) with his passing is hurt on the first pass play of the game and he was hurt by a player "Blocked" into him who was "coincidentally" diving head first into Carson's bad knee that held him out for the later part of last year. BTW KVO has over a decade of experience in pro football and knows every hatchet man trick in the league.

87. While I think it was an accident...
...I apparently have a different take on the play in question. I thought it was pretty clear that Von Oelhoffen purposely lunged toward Palmer, but only to take him down before throwing the ball. Steinbach's block brought VO's force downward, but I think VO still purposely lunged. Certainly not to hurt Palmer, but simply to make a play on the quarterback. He clearly felt bad after he saw Palmer was hurt.

54. Just give up. He is so blinded now, it is ridiculous.
I wanted to be mad at the guy who hit him like that, but after seeing the replay, anyone with ANY objectivity at all in them can see that he 1. Did not mean to do that
and 2. Was quite upset that it happened.

He threw his arms up in disgust and he stuck around near Palmer after it happened. Those are not actions of someone who did it on purpose.

Sasquatch, it sucks that this had to happen, but there was NO WAY it was intentional.

58. How did you know he threw his arms up in disgust?
It seemed to me that it was a sign of approval like I would make after a rolled a strike.

80. Dude, I was rooting for Cincy and went sick when it happened.
I have done the same thing to my knee, and felt the same pop that he described. I couldn't put any weight on it at all. Those always make me cringe, because I can "feel it" in my knee when I see it.

Believe me, I wanted to be pissed at him, but his body language and his actions immediately after the play showed me that it was not on purpose. So the sooner you can let go of this, the better off you will be. If you don't though, that's your prerogative, and I don't expect to change your mind - especially right now. But please note, you are not projecting a very "objective" persona, and some may remember that you were not in this case (as wrong as that is) and you may be lessening your credibility here (if you care at all - it's not exactly the most important thing, after all.)

So take this for what it's worth.

:hi:
