Having fun with Elvis - Polk a Little Sock Salad and more subversive stuff
Ms jus_the_facts brought up Elvis' "Polk Salad Annie" and I sent her one of my favorite 'silly' versions of the song, basically Elvis totally messing around with it in an unreleased rehearsal from August 10, 1970 (he opened that night on his third Vegas season, the one documented in the film Elvis - That's The Way It Is). I thought maybe some y'all would enjoy it, too, as sort of an offbeat tribute to Elvis' birthday. I like the unsanitized Elvis -- he was a cool guy and he had a lot of fun while making music.

Here're a few more bits recorded during unreleased rehearsals from July of 1970, with Elvis just blowing off steam by having fun:

Heart Of Rome (Elvis changes the words a tad, especially regarding what he's going to put in the fountains of Rome)

Memories (follows on from "Heart Of Rome" -- Elvis shows off his skills at animal sounds as well as throwing the real lyrics out the window...I love this one)

Stranger In My Own Home Town (caution -- X-rated lyrics on an Elvis-improvised verse and elsewhere...I mean, like way worse than either of the two above...not for the sensitive! :D )

Don't Cry, Daddy

Alla En El Rancho Grande (Elvis loved ranchero music -- part of this random jam was officially released a few years ago)

Froggy Went A Courtin' (part of this jam was also officially released a few years ago)

Quick flashback to 1966 for unreleased alternate takes of the blues "Down In The Alley," recorded during a gospel session (Elvis cracks up, and everyone else soon follows)

From the same year, unreleased takes of a silly soundtrack song ("Beach Shack"...catchy and one I kinda like despite myself) with Elvis' infectious laugh pervading

And then to 1968 for a take of "US Male" destined to be forever unreleased (another naughty word -- one of my favorite bits is in a later take, when Elvis includes with the spoken threats at the end of the song "I'll knock your d*** stiff, man.")

Finally, Elvis demonstrates his love of poetry with "Ode To A Robin" (taped, I think, at the home of his girlfriend's parents in late '73 or early '74...includes an expletive)
