Hello Chicago area DUers
My son and I will be flying from Sacramento to O'Hare Thursday morning. We'll be staying in Gurnee, not too, too far from the Naval Training Base where his sweetie will be graduating from basic and then beginning nursing school. We'll be there for five nights.

It looks like the weather won't be too extreme and we, at least I, plan on doing some sightseeing. I'd like to go downtown to see the Sears Tower and such, but I was wondering if there is public transit (trains, buses) from the Burnee area to Chicago. I hope so, because I don't like getting lost, especially in a large city.

I plan on driving up to the Harley Davidson factory in Milwaukee to see where my bike was birthed and want to hit other Harley dealers in the nearby IL (Palatine), WI (Kenosha), IN (Munster) area. Gotta get those souvenirs for wifey and the baby girl. And me, too.

I also want to experience authentic Chicago style pizza and some tasty kielbasa. Any suggestions on where to find some quality goods would be appreciated.

Thanks

3. seconded
Metra is the few or only public transportation systems in the US that makes money. Real nice trains.

2. It's a long way....
From Gurnee to Munster. I-80 from the Indiana border to Joliet is the worst roadway in the US. Expect long delays if you plan on going that way to Munster. Personally, I'd avoid anyplace south of the Loop, unless you absolutely must.

Check this out.

4. I'll put it on the "to do only if really bored" list
I just figured since I would be so close to IN, even if it's a backward state, I might as well go to the closest Harley dealer. Thanks for the advice.

8. It appears to be only 15 or so miles to the border.
At the least, I'll travel to Kenosha.

11. You are a stone's throw from the WI state line, and you are right off of
I-94. You can get to Kenosha, Racine and Milwaukee (and Chicago) REAL easily.

9. There is a DU gathering in Chicago on Friday night.
In the Lincoln Park area. You may want to hit the Illinois forum for details if you are interested.

:hi:

Laura

Who is really looking forward to the gathering...

10. I don't think you'll find public transit from Gurnee to a lot of places.
I live not too far from a few of the Harley plants - including HQ.

There's a way cool Harley dealership in Kenosha (right on I-94)I recommend that you check out:
http://www.ukeshd.com/

In addition, there's a Blues club in Chicago that you MUST get to called "Kingston Mines"
www.kingstonmines.com

And, for WI cuisine, try the Brat Stop (Hwy 50 right off of I-94) http://www.bratstop.com/ and the Mars Cheese Castle http://www.marscheese.com/.

Have a BLAST!

13. If you like Belgian Beers, you ought to stop by the Hopleaf Restaurant
in Andersonville (on the Northside, corner of Clark and Foster).
