And, how do you know if you're in the correct one?

1. Why is there a Wilmington, DE and a Wilmington, NC?
Probably because they liked the name!

I should have bought a house there. It would be worth three times as much now! Or one at Carolina or Kure Beach.

I live in Kansas, but only about 2 miles from Missouri. There is literally a street named "State Line Road" that divides the two. Most of the KC suburbs are on the Kansas side.

KCMO - 435,146 (Jackson and Clay counties 786,643)
KCK - 149,767 (Johnson and Wyandotte counties 517,047)

That'd be Missouri.

25. Aside from the obvious resemblance to a penis, it's
also a hang-out for gay men. Has been as long as I can remember. I can remember as a teenager that friends would warn to steer clear of that place at night because of the activity. But, I went there in the late afternoon just a few months ago and noticed the scene is still there. I was with my dog, Spike, and looking for a dog photo contest (cover dog for the new Milkbone boxes) and I observed more than a dozen cars backed into parking spaces. All of them had a single man in the car and there were a couple of guys standing around nearby. I said "ah-ha.....still the same old hang-out." It was oh-so obvious.

There was a problem with this in a public park near me. I really don't mind if they want to meet and have indiscriminate sex, to each their own. But I do mind in a place where lots of children and families hang out. Not cool.

43. Thirty years ago,
we lived at 5400 Main Street in KCMO for a couple of years. The Country Club area, as I recall. Not far from The Plaza.

A native Easterner, I was a little put off about moving there, but it turned out to be a great place. We used to walk to Troost Park - did I get that right? - and run the dog. Winstead's burgers. Arthur Bryant barbeque is still the best in the world.

And those ice storms in the winter! Man, I went to school in Maine, and I'd never seen anything to match them. Some places in Japan, maybe. But, driving down Main Street, under the arches of frozen trees is a pretty picture in my mind.

close to Lansing, and nowhere near a port :wtf:
Also in NY, about 1000 people, on Lake Erie, near Jamestown.
Also in Iowa, near Mason City
In North Dakota, near Grand Forks
In Tennessee, almost 6000 people
and, of course, Texas, over 12,000 people

Bloomington, Minnesota is named after Bloomington, Indiana where some of the early settlers hailed from. Is there a connection between any of the Portlands?

Both have dead downtown areas. KCMO's is just a bit bigger.

On the other hand, when you cross State Line into Johnson County, it is just a road and there is little difference from one state to the other. Same deal in midtown. I did that just a few hours ago and was thinking that if you didn't see the road sign, you'd never know you crossed a state line.

90. So did KCKS
In fact, I would be willing to bet KCKS is lots more blue than KCMO.

66. Well, no, actually. But when I was there I liked the BBQ.
Not sure if I was in Kansas or Missouri, but it was good BBQ.

My sales rep out there, the stupid horndog, tried to take me to a STRIP CLUB for lunch...I offered to fire him immediately if he didn't take me to some ribs, and right now.

67. Well, my dear Redstone, may I make a few suggestions?

There are different types of BBQ throughout the city. If you are going for lunch BBQ, head to Gates. Go for a sliced beef brisket on a bun with the spicy sauce. If you've got the appetite, get a half slab and split with someone as well. Great fries and rings.

If you are going for dinner, you can go nowhere else than Fiorella's Jack Stack in the Crossroads District near Union Station. Beautiful restaurant with some of the best meats in town. If you want to sample, start with the jumbo prawn appetizer. Their ribs are out of this world, especially the crown prime ribs. It's more than you could possibly eat, but is a house specialty. The burnt ends and bbq'd chickens are high on the list and the baked beans are a must. Unlike most BBQ restaurants, don't be afraid to order the fish or steak here either - they have some of the freshest and highest quality meat and fish in the country.

But if you just want a good old fashioned steak and don't mind dropping a few bucks, The Plaza III is the way to go. Guaranteed to be the best 1% of beef in the country. Accept nothing less than a filet mignon, medium rare. I guarantee it will be the best steak of your life or your money back.

68. Thanks for the info. I'm bookmarking it for future reference.
I don't remember where we did end up going after I explained to my rep that I could see tits at home whenever I wanted to (and probably better ones than those in the strip club), so I wasn't about to eat a dry burger and soggy fries for lunch in a city full of BBQ of nationwide acclaim, but we did go to a couple of places, and they were damn good.

If we end up making that cross-country trip we'd like to next summer, your recommendations will be in the "Must do" folder.

69. Excellent! I just got done packing for the FL Keys. Takin' off early AM.
And I look forward to your reviews if you make it to any of those places. But, trust me. I'm a native!

Have a great week!

81. Gates is for Tourists - Rosedale is for Locals!
Gates is some of the NASTIEST meat (undercooked and fatty) with a hideously sweet sauce plus they're a major polluter. I don't know a single native Kansas Citian who would willingly eat at Gates, and my family's been there since ... well, since it was called Westport.

Now Rosedale's a whole nother matter - Monday slab nights! Jake Edwards isn't bad, either (clove in the sauce and sweet potato fries).

You can't go wrong with the Savoy for a steak dinner, or the Hereford House, even though it's run-down and crappy looking. It's hard to get a bad steak back home ... not the case in California, alas!

91. Hereford House is better
So is Jess and Jim's, for that matter. And The Majestic downtown. And not as pricey as Plaza III. But you have to drive way far south to get to Jess and Jim's.

IMO, just about everything on The Plaza is overrated these days. I remember when it used to be a nice little shopping area, before the terminally hip got ahold of it.

92. I believe that would be KCMO
BUT - local trivia tidbit - there is NO 12th Street and Vine. They finally got around to putting up a sign where it used to be a few months ago. But the intersection was taken over by high rise public housing many years ago. Then they tore the high rises down and built townhouses. It is still a high crime area, so it isn't a tourist destination.

76. How about these
Indiana, Pennsylvania

I'm from Indiana, why is South Bend in the northern half of the state and why no North Bend?

Why in NCAA college sports, Miami University in Ohio stands for the town it's in but the NCAA calls it Miami of Ohio. Then Why does Miami Unversity in florida gets to be call simply "Miami" when Miami, florida is named after the town in Ohio, shouldn't the one that came first have the right to being called just "Miami"!

77. The Real Story
Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 02:03 AM by REP
Kansas City Mo started out in 1834 as Westport; then became known as Westport Landing and then City of Kansas (for the Kansa Indians) and then, in 1846, Kansas City (inc 1858 I think).

Kansas City KS started out as Wyandot (for the Wyandotte Indians) in 843; then 1859 City of Wyandot and then in 1866 it gathered all the little settlements (Quindaro, Agentine, Rosedale, etc) to become Kansas City, Kansas.

In the Jackson County MO/Mission County KS area, there were many Indian Missions (one reason part of Mission Co is called "Shawnee Mission" or "Mission") and many tribes, including the Kansa, Shawnee, Kiowa, Delaware, Wayndotte, etc. The Kansas River joins with the Missouri River at KC MO/KC KS, and both cities take their names from the rivers and tribe, not from each other.

93. One minor correction
There is no Mission County. There is a Shawnee Mission, but it isn't a city or a county; it is just a postal address. The county you are referring to is Johnson County.

79. The town of Carter Lake, Iowa
is actually in Nebraska. One has to drive through Omaha to get to it. It was due to a change in a bend in the Missouri River!!
