OMG just to weird. (Jaws down under)
(The name of the of where the attack happened was Amity just like Amity Island in the movie Jaws.)

Shark pack blamed for fatal attack

Brisbane: A woman desperately called out Shark! as she was being mauled to death in a frenzied attack by up to three of them but onlookers thought she was joking.

The sharks struck as 21-year-old Sarah Kate Whiley was swimming with friends at Amity Point, off Queensland’s North Stradbroke Island, on Saturday evening

Within seconds they had torn off both Ms Whiley’s arms and savagely mauled her torso and legs.

1. explain this
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 06:12 PM by sundog

Despite earlier reports, Insp Harding said there was no dog with Ms Whiley at the time of the attack, and that she was in water anything from chest-deep to 30 feet 9.5m.

must be a hell of a drop off :shrug:

Good grief there was also the death of a seven year old girl from being stung by a jellyfish.

Jellyfish sting 'like boiling'

THE seven-year-old stung by a box jellyfish in far north Queensland on the weekend suffered an agonising - but mercifully short - death.

"The pain is horrific; it's like being put into boiling oil," said Lisa-ann Gershwin, national marine stinger adviser with Surf Lifesaving Australia.
"She was probably dead within about three minutes. She lost consciousness very, very quickly, which was probably a good thing. It reduced her suffering."
<snip>
Box jellyfish are thought to be the world's deadliest creature, and have killed 71 people in the waters off northern Australia.

6. When I was eight years old,
I was stung by a jellyfish when a wave washed it up against my right arm and leg at Buckroe Beach, VA. I felt like I was on fire and ran from the water and down the beach screaming. A life guard saw me, chased me down, tackled me, and began rubbing sand on my arm and leg to help get the stinging feeling out. My arm and leg was covered with red bumps. It was hell.

8. Yup.
I stepped on a Man-o-war at Padre Island when I was 12. It was AWFUL! And it was just a little one!

This poor girl. You couldn't PAY me to swim in the surf in Australia. I'd go in up to my ankles, and THAT'S IT.

9. I don't get it either.
Why do people go into water that is known to have sharks in it?

10. I didn't realize this was a protected beach.
<SNIP>
ANNA BLIGH, ACTING QUEENSLAND PREMIER: This fatal shark attack is the first fatal shark attack ever to occur on a beach that has a shark protection measure in place.
<SNIP>
GENEVIEVE HUSSEY: Bull sharks grow up to 3.5 metres in length and there are plenty off the beach at Amity Point. For the past 40 years, Queensland has had a shark safety program in place, with 84 beaches protected by either shark nets or drum lines. Amity beach has two drum lines, baited hooks designed to catch larger sharks

2. I'm always amazed when "experts" call these attacks "accidents"
Usually, it's some surfer that gets a chunk of his/her board and a bite. "oh, he must've looked like a seal..." or "his kicking in the water sounded like an injured fish..."

Gimme a damn break. Wake up. Sharks are losing prey due to overfishing, red tide, etc, and now we're becoming it more often.
