26. Yes, cockatiels are very nice birds, as are budgies.
Both are underestimated and therefore may not get the great homes they deserve. :( :( :(

I used to raise African greys and Senegal parrots. I just have my old, fat Amazon now. :)

51. Right here!
I've had cats all my life, literally. I have 2 right now, Weebles (white female, shorthair) and Percy (black male, longhair). Had 2 before them, Pearl (white Turkish Angora, age 20 when she died) and Bailey (calico, age 17 when she died), 1 before those 2 (Kate, 17 when she died) and several before her when my parents farmed (I was only 3 when we moved into the city).

So I suppose I'm mostly a cat person but if it has fur, I'll make a pet of it. :D Except perhaps for tarantulas (No flames, please!!) :D :D

27. Ah, South American cichlids.
I've always loved the color of African cichlids, but they're SO aggressive. Usually the South American kind only eat what will fit in their mouths. Those African cichlids are extremely territorial. I've heard it's really hard to maintain them properly, but gosh, they're beautiful.

36. yeah
i went with SA cichlids for that reason, plus the fact that they obviously go well with other amazonian fish, like plecs.

Oh, and since you seem to know something about cichlids, I had a question. I got my firemouths a little over a week ago, and they STILL run and hide when anyone comes near their tank. Everyone on message boards i've posted on says "oh, give them a few days." But its been a damn week. So should I make an effort to be near their tank a lot, or is there anything else that might work?

40. I only worked in a pet store so I don't have experience with actually
keeping cichlids. That sounds like a question for someone who is a true enthusiast. Now if you had a question about your parrot, I could probably help you. :)

There are probably fish enthusiast forums online. In fact, I'd be very surprised if there aren't.

41. oh, there are loads of fish forums
but I keep getting the same advice... "just wait." But that doesn't fucking help me at all, because it's been two weeks, way more than most fish need to get accustomed. Well, thanks anyway.

If I ever get a parrot, I'll check with you :)

I know you can overfeed fish as well as snakes, but maybe they'll learn to recognize you as the good guy in awhile. Any activity makes my Arizona Mt. king very, very happy. :)

He's about four feet and very friendly:

Currently, I have a dog, 2 cats and a couple of fish. Oh yeah, and an SO. ;) We have had mice, hamsters and a lot more fish in the past. Does the family of gophers (Richardson's Ground Squirrels to you, Ladyhawk! :P) living in our garage count? They're cute and furry and not at all shy!

22. I like wild critters, too.
When I lived with my mother we were basically surrounded by forest and had all kinds of wild visitors, as MiwSher knows. She probably still has all the raccoon, fox, skunk and deer pics on her computer somewhere.

And yes, I'll accept the local vernacular. If Saskatchewan wants to call them gophers, that's fine, but to me gophers were always those tiny little burrowing rodents (pocket gophers) that ate our flowers and garden.

53. I like all animals, and understand most of them better than humans
I have special affinity for anything that lives by prey-animal rules like "Eye contact is scary."

I love birds because they are so strongly emotional; I think birds probably feel emotion more strongly than mammals (including humans). Also, birds are harder to earn the trust of than dogs or cats; there is skill in communication involved and it takes actual effort to maintain a good relationship with a bird in a way that it doesn't with more domesticated animals. I live with an umbrella cockatoo, one of the more challenging species of parrots*, and I like the challenge and the reward.

Tucker

*I know, technically Cacatuidae are not "true parrots," but "parrot" is a good vernacular word for all the Psittaciformes, so there.
