Drunk Woman Sics Pitbulls On Cops - Dogs Shot, Kept Attacking

<snip>

WELLINGTON, New Zealand --A drunken woman unleashed pitbulls on two New Zealand policemen responding to a domestic dispute, sending them scrambling to their patrol car where she bashed in their windshield with her feet, police said.

Gunshots and pepper spray couldn't deter the pair of angry hounds, which hurled themselves at the car's windows, said Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Grimstone in the northern city of Auckland.

The "intoxicated and aggressive female," meanwhile, "jumped up onto the bonnet of the car and smashed the patrol vehicle's windscreen with her feet," he said in a statement.

Back-up officers arrived and tried to negotiate with the woman, but to no avail. One of the dogs charged and was shot and wounded. The woman also assailed officers and was arrested, he said.

Grimstone said the shooting still didn't deter either dog, with the wounded one again turning on police -- and shot a second time.

"The dog has, only after being shot twice, then run off," he said.

Both animals were later impounded and were to be destroyed, he said.

The woman, aged 27 but not identified by police, faced charges of assault with a weapon, intentional damage, disorderly behavior and resisting police. Grimstone said more serious charges were likely.

"There is no question that this woman is totally responsible for the demise of these animals. Drunken, violent, aggressive and confrontational behavior like this will not be tolerated," he said.

2. pit bulls are a mean, vicious breed; they are meant to attack and kill.
as such, they are ticking time-bombs, and it is only a matter of time before one of them kills or maims someone. pit bull owners should be required to carry a license similar to a gun license, and, if one of their pets injures someone, they should be charged just as if they had attacked someone with a gun.

8. They are not a mean vicious breed.
I have owned pit bulls and they are big babies. It's all in the training. Just as I now have a Rottweiler. She is the sweetest dog you would ever want to meet and does not have a mean, vicious bone in her body. Your reasoning is all wrong.

9. they are more likely to attack than other dogs; look at the stats.
there are reasons that most home insurance companies will not insure people who own akitas, rotts, pit bulls, etc... numbers don't lie...

15. thanks. have read tons of info both for, and against, the breed.
you can't deny that the dog was historically bred for specific reasons, and that it is more likely to attack of its own volition than a breed like a golden, or an irish setter. sure, in a perfect world, all owners of dogs like this would train it perfectly, but wouldn't it make more sense to ensure that dogs like this weren't available in the first place? i'm not advocating killing them, but i don't see what continued breeding of dangerous breeds does for society. and, i don't buy the "trying to kill off a breed" argument; there weren't even "breeds" of dogs 12,000 years ago; they're a human construction.

11. From what I can tell, people have their views and won't
believe any different. Some people will always think that they are born fighters (and killers) and others will always think it is in the training. I personally believe it is a little of both. I have a friend who has one and it is a lovable dog. But I have also known people who have trained their dogs wonderfully and gave them tons of love and the dog turned. That doesn't normally happen with a Golden Retriever. But I also know that cocker spaniels can be that way too. People are going to believe what they believe. I think they are beautiful animals.
