A down-on-his-luck cook who took home $10 an hour making food for fans at Gillette Stadium won’t feel any more heat to bring home the bacon after winning $1 million off a scratch ticket.
Ronald Green, who is a lead cook for Snapchef, a food preparation service in South Boston, scratched his golden ticket Saturday during halftime of the New England Patriots playoff game.
It was some Christmas bonus.
“I don’t do turkeys,” said Snapchef owner Todd Snopkowski, who gave 40 of his employees the $5 tickets as a thank you for hard work. “I was hoping somebody would win a couple hundred bucks. That was the idea.”
Green, who is in his 30s, had a rough time last year with money, and was on the lookout for more hours at Snapchef, Snopkowski said. Green has worked for Snapchef for four years.
“He’s always (saying) ‘I need more work,’ ” Snopkowski said. “We can only give 40 hours. He’s always looking to do the right thing.”
Green was unavailable for comment.
Snopkowski said Green told him the ticket was the “gift of a lifetime” and that he planned to buy something nice for his wife.
Snopkowski gave Green and other employees the tickets at 1 p.m. Saturday, but Green put it in his pocket and went to work at the Gillette Clubhouse.
He didn’t scratch it off until 10 p.m. and soon after word spread to fans and even the cheerleaders.
“It was just surreal,” Snopkowski said. “He was so in shock.”
