DU amateur record producers- please critique my new song.

To put it in lay person's terms, the sound I'm going for is as if the Melvins did a collaboration with My Bloody Valentine, with some ambience and electronic noise thrown in.

I'm not completely happy with the final mix. I want the drums to be heavy, but a bit "dirtier."
thank you for listening. :hi:

1. Not to be a purist pedant, but...
if you want heavier drums, you need a real drummer and a nice big room to record in. The drum samples that are available for programming have come a long way, no doubt, but when rhythm tracks get quantized, "heavy" can't happen.

2. The only loophole I have found,
is to get away with making them sound as UNrealistic as possible, yet dynamic- kind of what Big Black did with Roland. That's where I am running into trouble.

This probably makes no sense. I know what I want, but don't know how to achieve it yet.

3. You should check out Metal Urbain.
They're the French band that Big Black TOTALLY ripped off. Interesting approach to drum machine use, especially considering the crap drum machines that were available in 1979.

5. Heheh...no board, no mic.
It's all digital, right into the computer's soundcard.

I use Line6 GuitarPort as the instrument preamp and amp modeler, Reason 3 for the synth and drum programming, and Sonar 4 and Acid Pro 5 for recording and mixing.

Thanks for listening. :)

7. If I could afford to be a luddite, I would.

:)
Once I get the means, I would like to start using "real" equipment.

8. An Idea On The Drums
First, you can reverb them up. Just creating space with "time" will make them sound bigger. Secondly, if you have one, run the drums through a small amp, or through your guitar processor. Don't add much of anything, but a little gain. This will dirty them up, and should provide a bit of soft compression. Then, they'll sound bigger without being louder.

Lastly, assign more than one location to the snare. Every snare hit can be doubled, but they can be shifted by 10 or 20 microseconds. You'll get some natural phasing that will increase the size of the sound too.

Nice work, though. The sound is clean. Very different than what i do, but different is never a criticism. Only an observation.
The Professor

10. I think the drums sound fine.
The guitars are heavy enough. I've found that when you make everything sound dirty and heavy, nothing sounds dirty or heavy 'cause there's nothing to compare it to.

How did you record the guitars, Chavo?

11. thanks.
I used GuitarPort, which is preamp with amp & effect modeling software. I used Sonar to record the guitar & bass tracks.

12. I think it sounds pretty good
I especially like your 'rhytyhm' (bnot sure if that is entirely appropriate for this song, but will have to suffice for now) guitar sound. Smooth AND crunchy, no real attack, it just sort of appears.

I don't have any specific advice the way the Professor does--but that sounds worth a shot to me. :)
