1. Dammit. At least they finally got a closer in there.
Sutter is an excellent choice.

Goose should've gotten in, too.

16. He was first on the ballot in 1998
I believe he has one more year...

This year he made the jump from 35% to 53%, so he may make it next year.

As long as they get at least 5% or something like that...

Sutter got in after 12 years...

9. If Richie Ashburn is in the Rice should also be.
The most feared hitter in the AL for 11 years. Did you ever see him play? Hit for power, average, great clutch hitter and learned the Green Monster pretty well too.
Based on who else has been voted in, Rice and former teammate Dwight Evans need to be there.

4. If Sutter made it, where's Lee Smith. #1 All time in Saves.
Jim Rice not being voted in is another crime.
He was the most feared hitter in the AL for about 11 years. Only playere ever to have 3 consecutive seasons of 35+ HR's and 200 hits.

25. No, there's actually a time limit
I believe they are eligible for election by the writer's up until 20 years from when they retired, leaving a 15-year window from their first eligible ballot until their last. Tony Perez, for example, was finally elected in 2000, the last year he was eligible for election. Jim Rice, who, I just read, got about 65% this year, only has three ballots left.

After that time period is up, players can still get elected through the Veteran's Committee.

Thanks for the clarification....

So Bert still has 8 years left then...

He should get in by then...his total has increased every year.

29. I think he'll get in, but it might take a few more years still, b/c of who
else is on the ballot in the years coming up. Next year adds Ripken, Gwynn, and McGwire to the ballot, so there won't be much room at the top next year, and the writers never seem to want to elect too many players at a time. Hopefully after that some of those guys near the top will get in. :)

19. So did Davey Concepcion
If he was on any other team he would have been in ages ago. It's tough when you played on a team that included Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez and Joe Morgan - all already in the Hall-of-Fame.

He was a talented shortstop (probably the best during his time in the big-leagues mainly competing with Larry Bowa) but the other thing was the guy could hit. You could always count on his .280-.300 for each season and he played all 20 years with the Reds.

I just hope Barry Larkin doesn't get the same snub when he is eligible for the Hall of Fame

31. I don't think he'll make it
I mean, Tony Perez BARELY made it in, which was a total sham. He deserved to be in years before he did.

I always liked Concepcion (I thought he was just fun to watch), but I'd stop short of calling him a hall of famer, personally. Of course, I did miss his most glorious years in the late 70s.

26. I don't think fans are qualified to say
who should be in the Hall and who shouldn't — or who should get the MVP, Cy Young, etc. for that matter. We're too emotionally attached.

Just sayin'.

30. Yeah, 287 wins is a lot
But so is 250 losses. And only one 20-win season. A 3.31 ERA is pretty good for his era.

(Hmmm... ERA/era. Baseball can be so confusing.)

Major points for longevity.
Yikes! In '86-'87 he gave up a combined 96 homers!

Can you imagine the mess if fans voted? :silly:

32. 3701 Strikeouts
Low ERA, 242 complete games, 60 shut outs....Those stats overcome the losses and lack of 20 win seasons.

33. I don't look at Ks as a Hall criteria
But that's just me.

The object of pitching is to get the other guys out. The most efficient way to do this is to make them pop up or beat it into the ground on as few pitches as possible. If a pitcher's striking out a lot of guys, he's not effectively using his fielders or his arm.

Smart pitchers know when a strikeout is needed and save their K stuff for those times. The rest of the time, they try to keep the seven guys behind them from getting bored.

I agree with you about the rest of it. The thing is, too many people — voting sportswriters included — think stuff like "He never won 20" and "How many pennant winners was he on?"
