OK. We have had dog pics, cat pics, and people pics. How about
horse pics?

This is Sunny, a 21-year-old American Paint Horse. His pasture buddy, a BLM mustang named Dancer, so far refuses to hold still for photos.

I know this will be the shortest pic thread ever.

3. I will,
he is still a little skittish, but at least he will walk up to me now. (As long as I have treats for him, that is.)

4. I've got a couple
A mare I leased in the early 80's, Strawberry:

And here's one that I owned, but had to sell 13 years ago. His name was Galahad, he was a wonderful yet complex fellow and friend who I'll never forget:

Sunny is beautiful! I love paints.

5. Great horses!
I never knew anything about them, but my wife grew up with them. We met Sunny when we lived in Washington, his owners lived next to us. They told us he was a bucking, unrideable, nasty horse. They sold him to us for $1. We tried a new saddle and had his feet properly trimmed and he was fine.

10. Thanks!
I came out of the womb a horse freak. I've always loved them, though I grew up in the city and we could never afford one. I was finally able to get my own, in my 20's, after an (small) insurance settlement from a car accident!

I started out western (just trail rides), then fell in love with show jumping and started riding English around age 14 or so. i haven't been able to ride the past 8 or so years due to physical problems, but I hope I will again. I always felt more comfortable on the back of a horse than my own 2 feet.

I'm glad you were able to figure out what Sunny's problem was. It's amazing how many behavioural problems can be traced to physical ones. :hi:

29. We had a nice little mare who went ballistic on us...
She went from a gentle mare to a man hater that kicked. I was close to docking her tail and taking her to the auction, but round penned her for a couple of hours first. She went back to her gentle ways.

6. I have a few
This is Moonwalker (and Watson)

this is Pee Wee (paint gelding - he is almost 20 as well) and his adopted orphan filly that has no name (HELP - maybe I should start a contest for Loungers to name her?)

I have more horses than I know what to do with (currently 9 plus this filly and two other babies), fortunatly I can run them with the cattle and don't have to buy hay!

7. Is the little filly a dun?
It's nice that you can go without buying hay. We have a small pasture right now and are feeding 500 pound round bales, one every 10 days or so.

9. Looks like a buckskin to me
but I can't see if there's a dorsal stripe...I don't even know if there would be one at that age.

I love buckskins...

17. I think there might be, but not sure.
Our next horse is a weanling mustang, who is a dun with the required dorsal stripe and leg bars. I have no idea when I will get to Missouri to get him, though.

14. She is the strangest color - I haven't figured it out yet.
Light mousey, I think. Her mother was dk brown almost black. I have two intact horses running around, not positive if the sire was a bay or my younger palomino - both of whom also go back eventually to another paint (not this guy)

This little girl has some other color on her legs and her tail has white in it - almost looks like the husband's mostly grey ponytail. heh shhhhh don't tell him I said that.

I always pictured it as much larger. Go figure.

11. He is about 15.1 hands,
the mustang is just over 14 hands. (If I learned right, a hand is about 4 inches.)

Depends on the breed, mainly.

I like them a little smaller, it's not quite so far to the ground when I fall off....

13. The gentlest horse I ever rode
was humongous. His name was Copper, and boy was he big! I was a little scared of him, but in reality, he was so great and patient with me. My first riding experience was terrifying--I was quite literally hanging on for dear life because no one had put my feet in the stirrups right. Thank god for the pommel--it was all I could cling to when I began slipping off the side.......

I survived, though, but it was a very long time again before I would get on a horse.

15. My actual favorite horses are draft horses,
the big monsters like Clydesdales and such, they tend to be very good-natured and gentle horses.

20. Have you ever ridden a Shire?
I haven't, but they fascinate me. Years ago I was at a country fair and the guys that shoveled crap in the barns said that Shires were their favorites. Friendly like big dogs. Always wanted to find out if this was true.

21. I have not ridden one,
but I also go to county fairs just to see the drafts. A lot of them will actually nuzzle your face, which is scary to some but I take it as a good sign.

19. She's a Percheron Paint cross
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 01:09 AM by wovenpaint
and is 15 hands (so far). Since she's still in training, my daughter does the riding and I'm helping with the groundwork-no stools:D
Jet's being trained using alternative horsemanship methods (horse whisperer style)-note the rope halter. It's fascinating to watch her progress.

My daughter just saw the photo of your paint and we both agree that HE's wonderful! (edited to note that Sunny is a HE....)

22. We boarded at a stable once
that bred Percheron-TB crosses. The Percheron stud was a big guy, somewhere between 17 and 18 hands. He was a sweetie, too.

26. He's gorgeous....
....horses have always fascinated me...one night my bf and I were at some stables and there was an old nag who just begged for attention...she layed her head down on my shoulder and kept it there...I cried because I didn't want to leave her alone. You're very fortunate to be able to enjoy them all the time. :)

28. I had 2 horses at one point..
I had an arabian who I was training and he threw me off and thank god I had a helmet on because it cracked it straight down the middle. I've had ever lasting back problems after that. I sold him later on.

My other horse - Breeze was an Appaloosa. She was quite the stinker. She had an attitude!! I miss her - I had to sell her back to her original owner. If you rode her bareback and she didnt feel like being rode, she'd tip her side and slide you right off her back  . Never hurt anyone. She died a few years ago from foundering really bad.

I'll have to dig up pictures.
