3. Anyone who gets characters without checking them....
It's their own damn fault, IMHO. I talked to the Japanese prof at my university before I got mine, just to be sure. Still, makes for some funny reading!

"hip trendy Chinese writing" that the kids today - especially the inner city rap, hiphop, and salsa culture, but also the white illiterati culture of the suburbs and the rural James Dean wannabe assholes - wear with great pride and sense of self-worth.

Sometimes they were very funny, these guys trying to be all hip and shit and phat and whatever, and wearing a symbol that means basically "shithead" or something dada like "Cabbage pole rider" or "pants-wetting book glypher".

I wish I could remember some actual examples, but I can't.

I'm not going to be called a cabbage pole rider. Whatever it is, it's not good.

I'm suddenly worried that my tattoo may be something completely different than I think it is.

Oh well. It still looks cool.

7. My cousin has a funny story about that:
He's a cop in the midwest and one time he was arresting some guy who was particularly proud of the new tat he'd gotten b/c he thought it made him look like a mean mother-fucker.

....only problem was, the tattoo said "SATIN", instead of "SATAN" Duh. :eyes:

12. A friend of mine once saved a major university press from embarrassment
by telling them that the Chinese characters on a proposed design for a book cover were upside down.

Another time, an advertising poster for Berthold Brecht's play The Good Woman of Setzuan had the title of the play correctly translated into Chinese, but the designer had randomly taken the middle character of the five-character phrase and put it on the line above, the equivalent of writing

Of
The Good Woman Setzuan

27. A client of mine pointed out that a martial arts "school"
was handing out certificates that translated literally into "sex house". Not really the expression for whorehouse, but pretty strange. Of course, he pointed it out on his website and got in a spitting match.

19. No
Okami is wolf, I know, although it doesn't surprise me if there are a shitload of other meanings. Just as kami means "hair" "paper" and "god." However, I know the right kanji :)

20. Right kanji, wrong spelling...
If it were Katakana or Hiragana, it would be different. No... it would be a different kanji, since the onyomi of o is different from oo.

Gettting a bit too techincal.

34. And
it also depends on which style of romanization you're using. In some versions, you get "oo" "ou" or "ô"

Isn't Japanese fun ^^;

30. my tattoo artist has one on his neck.
he got it from a menu, it means "chicken and brocolli". he did it as a protest after the entire class of '97 came in asking for chinese/japanese symbols. he won't do them anymore. he has a newspaper clipping on the wall in his booth. i read it as he did my last one.

he is definitely on the fringe.
