Caught in the act! (naughty cat photo)
Just a couple of hours ago, I caught The Wiley and Excellent Cat Named in the act of disturbing the delicate balance of nature. Time to get a taller pole for the bird feeder, I guess. :eyes:

you lure the birds to your garden with tasty treats and then let your cat pick them off one by one?

9. matcom, I know how you feel about cats being allowed outdodors off-leash.
This is the first time this has ever happened, and I happened to have time to get a photo of it because Ginger was on the feeder so long (he didn't know how to get down). I'm not trying to chane your mind about cats being allowed outdoors off-leash, but I'm not gonna engage in a flame war with you either. Heck, you can even have the last word.

11. Don't worry about it Heidi - he has a bounty on my cat Evita
and she caught the damn birds from inside my apartment through a small opening she created by my window-unit air conditioner.

4. Awwwww, not naughty Heidi
just doing what cat's are supposed to do. I do freak out when my cat hunts birds and baby bunnies. All this in my back yard, and she's on a leash. Can you believe that?

But he's such an unsuccessful hunter that this never happens.

Can't let the birdies get sick. Doing his part to prevent bird flu ;)

25. That's certainly an interesting theory.
Unfortunately, the afternoon update is that Ginger scaled the feeder again this afternoon (now that he knows he can do it) and managed to pick off a beautiful little yellow songbird. So, tomorrow, the bell goes on his collar, the bird feeder gets raised about half a meter, and I'll try to configure the inverted funnel that LyneSin described.

27. Raise the feeder. Smear the pole with petromalt
 Slippery stuff AND good for him. If he is like my cat, he will head AWAY from the stuff ('Tastes appealing to cats' my ass.)

7. if he climbs up like that
the birds are long gone before he even gets close them. Funny pic though. But to prevent him from climbing maybe you can smear something on the pole or put kind of a fence around it.

10. Exactly, MissHoneychurch.
He's the world's _worst_ climber and hunter. He couldn't even figure out how to get down from the pole, and that's why I had time to get a photo.

sometimes cats are just to funny without them knowing it. And I love it when they got caught in a strange act and then suddenly behave like they did it intentionally. It cracks me up every time.

8. What you need is an upside down funnel
We had them around all our birdfeeders. It's a funnel that wraps around the poll that is wide enough that the cats or for us mainly squirrels couldn't get into the bird feeder and kill birds/steal food. You need to add a little crisco to the funnel from time to time so the cat/squirrels slip off when they try to stretch around it.

It kinda looks like the funnel on this one:

I think my dad made the one we had but if you search on squirrel guards there are plenty out there

Thank you, LynneSin! That funnel, along with a taller pole, should nip this problem in the bud (as Barney Fife would say). :hi:

15. BTW, greasing the pole makes for hours of Sunday afternoon entertainment
Because those pesky animals know something is tasty on the top of the pole but keep sliding down because the pole has crisco all over it!

18. Bell the cat!
I can't see that furkit getting any satisfaction in this case--he looks like he's completely out of his element. But for those who allow their cats complete outdoor privileges, I suggest just putting a bell on their collar. It's been put there for the purpose of giving a signal to the prey that his ass is grass if he doesn't move and get out of the way.

24. It's snow on top of landscaping wood chips, rather than dirt,
and we leave the snow there because Ginger _loathes_ walking in snow. We formerly considered it a deterrant to him climbing the bird feeder; we learned today that it's not the deterrant that we thought it was. :(

(I'm the kind of cat abuser who feeds her cat deli roast beef, thin-sliced and rare, when he demonstrates poor hunting skills. "Good boy! Isn't this much better than that gamey-tasting, worm-infested wild bird flesh?" :yoiks: )

By my friend's band. Check it out:

It's so funny. It's based on a real cat and a real hat.

34. Ginger is just being a cat.
I feed the birds to but a cat I had to get rid of was always hunting them. I felt bad about this but I feed so many birds that I helped increase the bird population with young ones.

Ginger's twin came back last night, I got to see him or her.

35. Keep Ginger's twin away from your birdies, gf!
(I would _never_ get rid of Ginger for hunting. We just have to find a way of "redmediating" his behavior. If that means getting rid of the bird feeder, so be it. )

on Dell and the other two cats. She had to be the only cat, she is in a good home.

In spring I must feed a few thousand birds, I fell like Mother nature.

40. You're female, so I can assure you that
the Wiley and Excellent Cat Named Ginger would love you, too. In the summer, when our female guests tend to be bare-legged and wearing skirts, Ginger loves to give them a warm kitty welcome by hiding under their skirts and rubbing against their nekkid legs. :eyes: We haven't figured out whether its the lotion that many women have on their legs in summer, or whether it's just that Ginger's such a mama's boy.
