Ex-cab driver pays record $40m for New York house

Associated Press in New York
Wednesday January 11, 2006
The Guardian

A former cab driver who made a fortune from Russian oil contracts and Manhattan property has bought a Fifth Avenue mansion for $40m (£22.7m), the highest paid for a Manhattan townhouse.

Tamir Sapir, 58, left Georgia, in the former Soviet Union, in 1973 and lived in Israel, Germany, and Louisville, Kentucky, before settling in New York in 1976. He drove a cab for three years before going into business.

Mr Sapir, who currently lives in an apartment in Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, said he was considering moving into the mansion's penthouse on the sixth and seventh floors.
