AMBER Alerts and Radio Shack
I volunteer with the local Amber Alert group passing out ID kits and attending board meetings. This new relationship with Radio Shack is big news.

"The nationwide Wireless AMBER Alerts Subscription Drive kicks off today in New York City with an event hosted by Elisabeth Hasselbeck, co-host of ABC's The View, along with Ernie Allen, president and chief executive officer of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC). The two are teaming up to urge the public to visit any RadioShack store for assistance in signing up to receive the free Wireless AMBER Alerts on their wireless handsets."

For the rest of the article and a list of participating carriers, see:

Please consider doing this. Not only can you get alerts on the radio and highway signs, but now they can be delivered to your cell phone for free.

2. Ok, so here is my one selfish rant of the day
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 01:00 PM by LynneSin
I'm cruising up 95 north in Delaware and WHAM!!!!! Traffic just stops.

I'm thinking there is a major accident but what I find out is it's an Amber Alert on the highway sign and basically everyone slows down to a turtle space to read the thing.

We need to work on this - I'm worried these Amber Alerts are going to cause a major accident from people slamming on the brakes to read them causing a pile up of cars crashing into each other!

3. I understand completely
The organization (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) is always looking for ways to notify the public safely.

Maybe have the sign flash and drivers can tune into a low band AM radio frequency like you can at airports or in cities for traffic information?

In Columbus, the notice comes over like a tornado warning. We're to tune to a public service channel for the details.
