Anyone ever visit Opryland?
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 02:47 PM by eyesroll
I have to go there for a convention in a couple of months.

It looks ... scary.

:scared:

On edit: The theme park is gone, I know, but there's still a big convention/entertainment complex. That's what I'm talking about.

1. I thought the theme park was gone
and just the hotel was there? It's been many years, so my opinion probably doesn't even matter now.

4. It is; I was editing as you posted this.
It's at the Gaylord Opryland hotel/convention center. It really looks like it'll be impossible to leave.

3. I thought the hotel was beautiful. We have stayed there several times.
I think you will like it.

This from someone who abhors country music.

9. I worked at the theme park one summer when it was open.

I also worked on the set of "Nashville Now" filmed at the Opryland theater for a while. Back then, Mr. Roy Acuff lived on the grounds. He would call me when he was coming back from the grocery store and I would carry his groceries in for him. He was a really sweet old man.

The Hotel is massive. You can easily get lost in there. I personally like the conservatory for drinks.

The decor is high class country, if there is such a thing. It is good quality products that are kind of gaudy. Nevertheless, it is a masisve facility with lots to offer guests. If you are going to be in Nashville for any length of time, get away from the Briley Parkway area and go downtown to the old Ryman Auditorium and the surrounding area. It is a pretty cool part of town.

11. The theme park waqs turned into a Mall.
Its one of the better malls in the Nashville area. In a way you could call it a flea market.

12. I live south of Nashville (about 65 miles).
I have been to the opry complex many times. You will have a good time, there is a large mall where the theme park once stood within walking distance (with foot paths) from the hotel. You could also take a boat to downtown Nashville and back. Plenty to do and see there.

14. I was there in the 70's and went to the theme park
and the grand ole opry. I think the rest of the stuff is newer. I was also about 10.

Have Fun!

15. is your convention at the Opryland hotel itself?
Treat yourself to the Sunday brunch if you are there on Sunday morning. Or just walk by and look at it. Biggest damn brunch line I ever saw. I second the comment on the conservatory. Also check out the murals.

Downtown is pretty neat, and the Vanderbilt/Belmont University area is typical collegetown with funky eateries, shops etc. The Parthenon and Music Row are in that part of town.

Get yourself some good pork barbecue too.
See if you can catch an act at the Exit In
Call up Al Gore (he lives in Nashville)

The old theme park was fun. The mall which replaced it is an outlet mall of sorts.

Have fun.

17. I wouldn't stay @ the Hotel unless you cannot afford a rental car
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 10:18 PM by benny05
Most of my colleagues at a convention in 2004 said their rooms were small for the convention price and weren't that great. I stayed less than a mile in at Marriott Motel like place and had good rest, Internet for free, but we took our car, which made the trip cheaper.

Easy to get lost in the hotel centre. Be prepared to ask for directions all of the time.
