Anyone a member of a national-chain gym?
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 04:53 PM by lizziegrace
I'm looking at a couple here in Ohio. Any opinions one way or the other.

If I'm hanging out with musicians who are a little younger than me, I can't continue to look like this... I was joking with my friend that I bet someone would ask why his mother keeps getting invited.

:P

Not to mention, I need to get healthier. I'm too young to feel this damn old.

1. Forget the "chain" gyms.
Nasty looking people use the machines, sweat all over them and then don't wipe them off. If you have an extra room in the house, find some used exercise equipment at yard sales, buy some free-weights, a mat and that's about all you need. Plus if you get out of the exercise habit the old equipment is great to hang clothes on.

3. I've been considering the home stuff
But I'm moving in a few months and will have to pay to have it hauled. Also, I'm out of room for another piece of anything.

I'm looking into a small local place and see if I can get a 3 month membership. Gotta get my metabolism up and use equipment that won't further destroy my bad knees.

6. See if you have a local YMCA
I've never been to one that I can remember but I'm sure you don't have to sign a contract with them.

8. We have a huge YMCA
But it's downtown and from what I'm told by members, not very inexpensive.

2. I'm a member of Gold's.
I got a good deal through my employer. My gym was recently remodeled with lots of new equipment. Plus, there are 7 gyms in the area, and I can use any of them I choose (although I go to just the one).

4. Are you already in shape
or look like the rest of us couch potatoes? I hate going somewhere if I'm the only dumpy one.

5. Before I joined I had lost a lot of weight.
But I was not in shape. I was really soft. Now, things are better. I'm still soft around the middle, but other parts of my body are better. My gym has all types of members. I once hired a trainer who said that many of her clients were ordered to the gym by their doctors. I can believe it.

I tend to work out early in the morning. Lots of retirees as well as students and working folks. It's a good mix.

9. Be careful and read the small print.
Ask lots of questions and pin them down.

You're welcome. :hi:

11. I'm still hanging on to a Bally's membership...
I don't have any problems with people leaving machines dirty and stuff. The one I go to has a batting cage that is loads of fun.

It's within 1/2 mile from my place, so I go more often than I would if it were farther away. I don't know if I would go if I had to drive 30 min to get there.
