4. i've only worked temp for 10 years
with the exception of maybe one or two full time positions, and have had good track records with several national firms and STILL can't get work.

5. I'm surprised they're not checking your credit report.
Since apparently a credit rating is all that counts these days. :grr:

6. i couldn't believe the ad i saw the other day
a 9 or 10/hr job and they wanted a cover letter, resume, salary history, and they made sure to say that the candidate must pass a credit check.

it was for a file clerk position or something.

7. Maybe you need to
take a bag of stools with you next time that you go in, just in case.

And maybe some pee in one of those take-out juice glasses.

...Then ask if they'd had breakfast (or lunch).

8. They really have very little power
So they excersize it whenever they can...most were Rush chairs for their Fraternities and Sororities...

9. contract agencies are all over the map on this
I've had some that want to check your refs before they even talk to you, which I won't do.

And others that don't check refs at all because if there is something bad they don't want to know. They just want to bill for you, end of story. There's a million more where you came from, but there are a million agencies too.

10. Blatant discrimination
I know for a fact that temp agencies would rather send out a pretty blond face to an admin assistant position, for example, than a far more qualified but homely-looking nonwhite (read: me). After all, that's what the expectation of the client firms are supposed to be.

I've never landed any good positions through temp agencies, period. And I have great college education and excellent skills.

In fact, a few temp agencies have been known to "invent" excuses - like me "re-arranging my boss's desk" - to eliminate me from their rolls. I could be in places like San Francisco with all its anti-discrimination laws, and they will ALWAYS find a way around them.
