Lack of manners.....
maybe its me since I grew up in a family that stressed manners and decorum but I think that I see less and less of this in the public in general. What does anyone else think?

1. Agreed. I find it fascinating when I hold a door for someone or say
"bless you" or "gezundheit" when someone sneezes and they just have a look of absolute shock on their face that a stranger would display courtesy.

3. When my children were younger, they would always hold the door
for people going into or out of a store. Virtually no one thanked them, so I would usually say, pretty loudly. "Just because someone is rude and doesn't thank you is no reason not to be polite yourselves".

And once when I was pregnant with my third and had my son in a stroller, I was attempting to go through the bathroom door and this old hag tried to push past me. I stopped her with a straight arm almost to her neck and yelled "Are you fucking kidding me? Wait your turn".

10. People always show pause when I ask how they're doing...

And sincerely reply to their own greetings. It's so weird.

I hate it when people who are busy, expect everyone else to cater to their hectic schedule, as if it's everyone else's fault that their too time cramped to breath.

2. 100% agreement

Check out people at stores don't say thanks anymore...they expect you, the customer, to say it.

People don't move out of the way if you're trying to walk past them.

Nobody lets another get ahead of them.

It's really kind of sad.

It's almost the exception, now, when a person *is* nice.

4. I've noticed a steady decline of sidewalk manners.
When I was younger, you stepped aside on a narrow path to let someone older than you pass, you did not come to a sudden stop on a busy sidewalk, or at a subway entrance, you did not ride your bike on the sidewalk...those are just a few.

So many times I've been walking, especially in the winter when the snow bilds up and the sidewalks are very narrow, and young men will just plow right by, runniong me off the sidewalk, instead of stopping and letting me pass.

5. Absolutely
Manners have been on the decrease for a while now, it seems. People are more self-absorbed.

6. My daughter told me a few years ago that when she held the door
for people when she and her friends went to the mall (teenagers) her friends laughed at her and asked her if she was crazy. She said no just polite and she still does it.

7. Wow, I must live in a bubble
I am a teacher and most of the students in my school still address the adults as "sir" or "ma'am". Yes, this is a public school with over 2000 students.

People around here still hold doors for others and a "thank you or thanks" is given in return.

Around town people do not honk their horns unless they are say "hello"; if one honks their horn in traffic because they are angry we all know they are from out of town.

12. not quite that polite, but almost
Most kids in the local public schools, aside from being lively kids, are well-behaved.

If I model it, they will follow. Manners are not extinct at all.

9. Yes, I agree.
It's a sad testament to our society, but that doesn't mean we need to stop being polite.

What goes around, comes around....
