What would get YOU out of a coma?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x121369

Inspired by HamdenRice's thread on the plans by doctor's to raise Sharon from his coma via a lamb sandwich, I am asking DUers:

What would get YOU out of a coma?

For me, it would be the sound of one of my cats in distress. I can go from dead asleep to pushing back the blankets and half out of bed in .5 seconds when I hear one of my guys crying in that way. It's not the volumn, but the tone. I locked my Grrlie cat in the spare bedroom the other night by accident and was woken at 3 something by the sounds of her tiny little distress mew (she barely speaks above a whisper). There were two doors and half a house between us, but the minute I heard it I bolted up going, "What's wrong with the cat?!?!"

1. That would do it for me too..
I heard a newborn kitten mewing in the tall weeds at sunset (think Millions of birds chirping)..I heard that kitten and found him in the weeds in time to warm him up and add him to the other 4 I had previously found.. He was starting to get cold to the touch , but I knew that pitiful little cry..:)

Big karmic brownie points for that, SoCal!

Speaking of pitful cries, one day I was down at the Monterey aquarium where they do a lot of otter pup rescue. If you've never been there, they have a large outdoor pool for rehabing and letting the pups get their sea legs. Once they reach a certain age, they allow the pups out into the open bay with a trainer so that they can learn how to fend in the wild. Once they are proficient, they can stay out for awhile, exploring and playing in the seaweed forests before being called in by the trainers. The day I was there, there was a little guy out playing in the surf with the trainer sitting on the pool's ledge that looked out into the bay. Well, he got a little further away from his "mom" than he thought because, all of a sudden, he starts this panicked screaming that whipped every head out around the pool in his direction. It was a "MOM I CAN'T SEE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU!" cry that was understandable to everyone who was hearing it! The trainer started calling out to him as he paddled as fast as he could back to her, crying his little heart out the entire way!

That sound is so recongizable, even between species.
