Bands did the best albums before they wen't mega....
Think about it...Fleetwood Mac's pre Stevie Nicks stuff was sublime...albums like Penguin and such were just amazing.

Pre-DSOTM Floyd - same thing. Meddle is one of my all time faves.

Led Zep - I still rank I, II and III as pure unadulterated genius....

1. I'd argue with you about PF
"Animals" is quite underappreciated, for example.

JMO, o' course, and it's all subjective.

But, yeah. Journey's "Look Into the Future." Great example. And "Infinity" was pretty damned good.

3. The Lemonheads.
Nobody believes me, but back before Evan Dando became an "alterna-hunk," the Lemonheads were a kick-ass Power pop band with two great songwriters.

4. Hate Your Friends and Creator are the bomb
Then somebody cut Evan's balls off and he became a top 40 jagoff.

5. Plus, Ben Deilly was underrated as a songwriter.
It's overlooked that he actually had MORE writing/singing credits on the first two Lemonheads albums than Dando (even though Dando had the better voice). When Ben Deilly left, they got worse and more popular.

8. No one remembers Soul Asylum?
Dave Pirner was in an absolute zone until he dumped his longtime girlfriend for Wynona and the hit it big with "Runaway Train" (worst song on that album by far).

The older albums were song writing genius.

9. Even though they were always mega

I think the Beatles started going downhill with perhaps their most acclaimed album, Sgt Pepper. Still great albums afterwards, but the songwriting got worse and worse, especially from Lennon.

11. Aerosmith 1, Get Your Wings and Toys in the Attic.
All others are lame and too commercialized.

12. The Bee Gees!
Their first album had some excellent songs & great harmonies. Bright, poppy stuff with just a bit of psychedelia.

Then they went to Disco Hell.
