I just ordered my 17" iMac!
I'm ordering one for video editing. I know it's not top of the line, but it will run Final Cut, and that's what's important.

I'll still be taking my PC with me to UWSP, My PC is my gaming machine.

Unfortunatley, how am I going to rig it so that I can have my iMac, my PC, and my subwoofer on my dorm room desk?

1. I'm torn on what to get...
i wanted to get something portable, so i could take my work on the road, instead of sitting at home all the time...but they just released the new intel macbook, so i want the power, but i want 17 inches, and they dont' make that yet...

and at the same time, i want to get some music editing stuff, and a g5 might be best for that...but then i lose the portability...oh the choices.

2. I wanted a notebook.
But the notebooks that could run final cut were out of my price range.

4. Did you order one of the new Intel-powered ones or a G5?
Either way, :woohoo: for you!

I have the 20" G5 and love it. :) Mine is the first-gen, though, so no built-in iSight camera for me. :(

6. I know what you mean
Before this one, I had a three-year-old 500 MHz G3 iMac DVSE (the graphite one). Going from that to the new one was a big change, to say the least! Finally being able to try out GarageBand was tons of fun, too.

I can't use mp4s with Audacity

7. hasn't Jobs been frothing over how the Intel 'Macs' are "screamers"?
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-6025409.html

"We're a little ahead of schedule," he said, with Intel Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini joining him onstage dressed in a head-to-toe "bunny suit," the protective suits that workers wear in chipmaking facilities. "These things are screamers."

You know, kink isn't allowed in the organization I work for... this is not just unprofessional, they're laughing at us. (Why not AMD instead?)

Once released in February, the MacBook Pro line of laptops will include a $1,999 model running at 1.67GHz and featuring a 15-inch screen. That version will also come with an 80GB hard drive and a new infrared sensor to use with the Apple Remote control device. A second version will feature a 1.83GHz processor and a 100GB hard drive and cost $2,499.

"The MacBook Pro is the fastest Mac notebook ever, obviously," Jobs said.

Gee, and all due to a non-Motorola CPU. An Intel one, no less! (And AMD is known for kicking Intel's fuzzy bunny butt too...)

10. I have Final Cut Express on my machine, haven't used it yet
Apple was running a special deal when I bought it--it cost $99 with the purchase of a new Macintosh. It didn't come with any manuals, though, so I'll have to hunt down a good book so I can teach myself.

11. Final Cut and intel Macintoshes
You're going to have to wait a little while if you intend on using Final Cut Pro on your shiny new Intel-fueled Macintosh. New software is going to be released in "universal" format, which includes installers for intel and PPC based computers. The new iLife and iWorks versions are the first shipping universal titles. While rosetta promises PPC emulation for older software such as Microsoft Office, Filemaker, etc., pro software such as Final Cut Pro will *not* run on the newly announced macs at this time. Rosetta will not run software that uses Altivec. Users of FCP will be able to order a new CD with the universal installers in March, at a cost of $49. Yes, it should be free, but we all know how cash-strapped Apple is. No word yet on my editor of choice, Final Cut Express. They'll probably just release a new version and stick me for another $100.

Moving to Intel was the smartest thing Apple has done since the original iMac. Hopefully, the transition to the new universal software will be smoother and (more importantly) quicker than the OS X transition.
