What books should those 95% of Americans read?
For the 95% of Americans that supposedly don't read books, I'd say there are plenty of books they should be forced to read. It would make the lives of the rest of us so much better. I'd start with "The Ugly American." Every time that I read it I get so mad and wish W read (and understood) books.

What other books should the 95% read?

1. I'm not the biggest Zinn fan
but "A People's History of the US" definitely makes you think hard about winners and losers in history.

George Orwell - 1984
Aldous Huxley - Brave New World
Margaret Atwood - The Handmaid's Tale
Jack London - The Iron Heel
Sinclair Lewis - It Can't Happen Here, Babbitt, Elmer Gantry
Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451
Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse-Five, God Bless You Mr Rosewater
Daniel Quinn - The Story of B

Those are just off the top of my head (and I haven't even listed any nonfiction).

4. Sadly, they probably wouldn't understand any of them
I don't get people who don't read. What do they do when they're sitting on the toilet?

5. A Nation of Sheep
It's an old book that never went into great publication, but for me it was instrumental in my waking up.

7. I like to get lost in a good John Grisham novel. " A Painted House"
and "The Last Juror" are two that I'll recommend..
