Got to love our moms but.... |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-12-06 06:12 PM by DaveTheWave
My mom just walked over as she lives next door, asked me if my wife and I wanted to sign a petition for a marriage protection act (against gay marriage) and I said no, we don't. Get this, she's a hispanic senior citizen and a lifelong democrat, with gay friends but she's a devoted catholic and says that's why she has to do it (morally) even though she thinks legally they should be able to.
What to do?

1. Tell her if she thinks they should legally be able to, |
|
then she should not work to enact laws to ban it.
Marriage is a civil institution, not a religious one.

...explained that it's legalized discrimination. Being gay is not against the law and if you obey the laws and pay your taxes, you are entitled to the same rights as everyone else. It's an issue my wife and I are very strong on and I'm surprised she didn't know that.

5. You'd have a hard time telling a Catholic that marriage is not a religious |
|
...institution. It's one of seven sacraments.

6. Agreed and if she wasn't my mom... |
|
...I'd point out to her that catholic priests preaching morality and anti-homosexuality is like Carl Rowe teaching ethics LOL!

7. There's really nothing to do. |
|
it's not your job to change her perspective, and, although I can certainly appreciate your wanting to do so, it's just a set-up for disappointment and frustration.
My mom is staunch Catholic, as well, and I've had to come to terms with the fact that we view the world very differently and that's just the way it is. Oh well.
I still love her, even though she drives me nuts sometimes.

My mom earned it too as much grief as me and my brother gave our parents growing up ;)

9. All I can say is, as a mother now, I have MUCH more compassion |
|
for my mother than I did before I became a parent.
Parenthood ain't for the fainthearted, that's for sure! And as the mother of a 12 yr old boy, I feel especially responsible to raise a peace-loving, woman-honoring man.
Sounds like you're a good son, Dave. I respect a man who honors his beloved mother.
