Woman charged with stabbing estranged husband's dog

-snip-

Austin police have charged a woman with cruelty to animals after they say she stabbed her estranged husband's dog 27 times after an argument.

The dog was later euthanized.

Police are searching this afternoon for Joanne Hinojosa, 31, who has not been arrested on the state jail felony charge. She faces up to two years in a state jail if convicted.

According to an affidavit filed Thursday, Hinojosa's husband, Reyes Martinez, 31, was in the front yard of his house talking to a friend when Hinojosa drove up and began arguing with Martinez. Hinojosa at one point tried to punch Martinez, the friend told police, and Martinez ran down the street and called police.

The friend, Alberto Rivera, told officers he saw Hinojosa pick up Reyes' dog, Marti, and take it inside.

The rest of the article is here.

I was recently admonished for sticking up for someone who tried to use humor to lighten up another thread....

9. Can I ask for a new DU policy? Seriously?
Is there ANY way, when someone posts something like this, to put in the subject line something like "Upsetting animal story"? Please? And not put exactly what happened to the animal in the header? Like, no "Dog stomped to death by teens"? I mean this -- these things upset me so much, sometimes I have trouble sleeping. God, I accidentally ran over a squirrel yesterday and cried all the way to work... and I fucking hate those destructive tree rats.

12. It is pretty gross and upsetting....
and posters do go on about spoiling the end of a movie or book.

Yours is not an unreasonable request, IMO.

13. You must be an animal empath.
I'm serious. I've never heard of someone being so emotionally affected by a story like this. Graphic photos upset me, viscerally, but stories like this only sadden and disgust me.

Anyway, I'm sorry my post has upset you but your sensitivity is actually touching.

14. It drives me crazy, it makes me so upset.
I'm not mad at you, FC, I promise! At least you didn't put, "Dog stabbed 27 times by angry ex."

I'm like that with movies, too -- I can stand to see the people die better than the pets!

16. I'll definitely keep you in mind regarding future postings of this kind.
I think the thing about animals is that they bear no responsibility for their bad treatment. They are truly at our mercy, thus their protection should be of highest importance to us.

11. What a selfish, pitifull, hateful woman.
An obvious crime like this deserves at least 5 years. It's disgusting. Dogs are such amazing creatures. Why someone would do something like this I don't know. I think of my Dalmation Tex and how much warmth he has brought into our home and I wonder why humans can be so horrible. Pathetic. And pathetic to joke about it too.

17. Actually, it's not that uncommon
The Justice Department did a study when I was working there on stalking. I forget the exact stats, but about up to 10 percent of all cases involve the pet of the victim being threatened or killed. It's also quite common in domestic violence incidents: The animals are used as a sort of surrogate to threaten the victim into doing what the abuser wants: Kind of like a horse's head in the bed.
