"Still Be Around"- Uncle Tupelo
My favorite band of all-time, and one of their greatest songs, thanks to Jay Farrar's moving lyrics and beautiful melody. And Jay's voice is a national treasure; the George Jones of our time...

I don't see you through the windshield
I don't see you in faces looking back at me
alcohol doesn't have much that matters to say
can't imagine where you and time to kill will stay

when the bible is a bottle
and the hardwood floor is home
when morning comes twice a day or not at all
if I break in two will you put me back together
when this puzzle's figured out will you still be around
to say you've just been there
walking the line, upside down

walked and breathed many a cancerous mile
where the bat of an eye is too slow to beat the coffin
they won't tell it on the TV
they can't say it on the radio
they pay to move it off the shelf and into our minds
until you can't tell the truth
when it's right in front of your eyes

when the bible is a bottle
and the hardwood floor is home
when morning comes twice a day or not at all
if I break in two will you put me back together
when this puzzle's figured out will you still be around
to say you've just been there
walking the line
upside down.....

2. Have you heard "California Stars" ?
In my box of musicfiles, I only have Uncle Tupelo's cover of Effigy.. which is darn good.
I'm sure you've heard Wilco's version of the Arlo Guthrie poem?

California Stars

I'd like to rest my heavy head tonight
On a bed of California stars
I'd like to lay my weary bones tonight
On a bed of California stars

I'd love to feel
Your hand touching mine
And tell me why
I must keep working on

Yes I'd give my life
To lay my head tonight on a bed
of California stars

I'd like to dream
My troubles all away
On a bed of California stars

Jump up from my starbed
Make another day
Underneath my California stars

They hang like grapes
On vines that shine
And warm the lovers' glass
Like friendly wine

So I'd give this world
Just to dream a dream with you
On our bed of California stars

I'd like to rest my heavy head tonight
On a bed of California stars
I'd like to lay my weary bones tonight
On a bed of California stars

I'd love to feel
Your hand touching mine
And tell me why
I must keep working on

Yes I'd give my life
To lay my head tonight on a bed
of California stars

I'd like to dream
My troubles all away
On a bed of California stars

Jump up from my starbed
Make another day
Underneath my California stars

They hang like grapes
On vines that shine
And warm the lovers' glass
Like friendly wine

So I'd give this world
Just to dream a dream with you
On our bed of California stars

So I'd give this world
Just to dream a dream with you
On our bed of California stars

(Dream a dream with you)

3. yes!
Mermaid Avenue by Billy Bragg and Wilco is a great record, and that's my favorite song of it. I love how Tweedy and Billy Bragg's voices meshed on it; I don't think anybody other than Jay Farrar sounded better with Tweedy..

8. I had a friend who banned this and "whiskey bottle"
from any party where alcohol was being served, as they were too depressing. But it's a great song.

14. hahaha
Did he ban "Moonshiner", too?:)

Tupelo's run from 1989-93 was amazing; the best band in the world at that time...

16. Nah, that one's not depressing, just mournful
personally, I like listening to Uncle Tupelo when sad-drunk. Lets you wallow in a bad mood without deepening it.
