Interesting fued going on in a friend of mines family... |
|
I'd love some of your opinions on whos right in this argument.
First off, in thailand there are no middle names, only first and last, and everyone has a nickname, which is used even more frequently than the first name, so everyones known as like David "Banana" Smith, and everyone calls you Banana.
Well in this family, which is very wealthy, the mother supports her son and his wife, they basically live in her house, and she pays for everything.
So her daughter-in-law just had a kid, and gave the baby her name, I can't remember it right now, and also gave the baby her nickname "My".
The mother had also come up with a nickname "Boong"(don't ask).
So now its erupted into this fued, with the daughter-in-law saying its her baby, she'll name it what she wants. and the mother saying, she supports their family, and should be respected, by being allowed to give the baby its nickname.
Its gotten so bad that the daughter-in-law is moving out, and there might be a divorce.
Where do you all weigh in on this?

6. In the West, I'd tell the grandmother to eat shit and go fuck off. |
|
Doesn't matter how much fucking money she's giving to the fmaily, she has no ethical or moral right to naming the child.
But, in the Eastern world, there is a level of tradition and respect that demands that the daughter-in-law SHOULD have offered the right to the mother-in-law.
Ultimately, the mother-in-law is a vindictive bitch, but the daughter-in-law screwed up, too, by not including her MIL.

Boong-My?
Edited to say that when I have a child, my parents as well as my in-laws know that they don't have a say in the name because it won't be their child. At the same time, they don't support us financially so maybe it's different. For us, even if they did, they wouldn't have a say. But we're Kansans so it's not exactly the same...
