has "Inside the Actors Studio" jumped the shark?
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 01:35 AM by terryg11
I'm not a huge fan of Lipton's but do enjoy the guests he has on and some of his questions are good although the man is clearly very full of himself.

Why has it jumped the shark? the guest list. I like Martin Lawrence and Queen Latifa, even think they are good actors but their resume is still a bit short for such a "big honor". Not to mention Elton John, didn't realize he was such a huge actor. Anyway, for a show that's supposed to be about A-list actors it seems to have outlived itself.

Oh, and does anyone else think the term "jumped the shark" has jumped the shark?

1. "Jumped the Shark" has always been a stupid term.
I had to look it up. But I think that if you instinctively somehow knew where that term originated, than you are more than kind of a loser.

Sorry guys--but people with photographic memory of all things Happy Days frighten me. :scared:

2. I know that's the reference point for it
but I think the term came around some time later? I never heard it used before until maybe six years ago if that?

3. Some pseudo-hipster I think made it up and kept saying it until
everyone (mostly online) knew what it meant. Shame on them for actually adopting it, though!

If a term has to be explained by laying out the narrative of an entire Happy Days episode, than it's far from clever. And it's pretty annoying.x(

9. Such an extreme view for something so innocuous
What do you feel about other neologisms like "to go postal" or is it something about "jump the shark" that bothers you in particular?

18. Going postal makes sense, because the public at large is
aware that a few postal workers over the years went nuts and shot at people. Which is very weird, but pretty widely known.

No normal human being would randomly associate "jumping" a shark with a bad epsiode of Happy Days. Unless they are someone woefully addicted, and I mean woefully, to old reruns. It's just a stupid term.

I've just always hated indie references. To me, THAT seems pompus.

Very high-school, in a way.

37. It's from the Simpsons. One of the school bullies is grown up
describing how he got a divorce or something. His little boy is sitting next to him and states, "I sleep in a drawer!". I don't know why, but it sends me into hysterics. And it is thought-provoking, as you can see.

Hey, maybe I can create my own obscure indie reference with that one! Like, instead of someone being referred to as an internet addict, you could say, "Oh, you know Jim. He sleeps in a drawer." That's a great idea, right??? RIGHT?!??

It's part of his malajustment due to his parents' divorce, IIRC.

Why han't Kearney been on Actors' Studio?!

24. What does that even mean?

Instinctively? Someone knows from birth what the term "jumped the shark" means? That person isn't a loser. That person is somehow embued with knowledge through means of which science is completely ignorant.

If someone knows what it means because they happened to be around when the term came into popular acceptance, how does that make them a loser? Are you going to be a loser at some point in your life because you know to what the term "moran" refers, assuming you do, of course.

Why am I picking on this? I find it a bit weird that someone would offer implied insults to those who happen to have knowledge, regardless of how silly the knowledge may be. I also know the origin of the phrase "the worm has turned." I suppose that makes me a loser too.

32. You know, the day two rational people are sitting on computers
debating the cultural value of a term derived from an episode of Happy Days with Fonzie on a surfboard, is the day I need to sign the hell off.

Sorry if I offended. This is truly not of importance to me...I just observe and comment. By all means, enjoy your special language!

33. No comment about value ...

At least not from me. As I recall, you're the one who said anyone who happens to know where this term derived is a "loser," and quite frankly I would not have given any comment in this thread a single thought had I not happened to run across that bit of wisdom. Yes, I know you said "instinctively," which is simply a word you pulled out of the air thathad no meaning in the context of its usage. No one has any "instinctive" knowledge of cultural slang.

I really don't care if others are interested in the history of such terms. I do get irritated at suggestions those who are have something wrong with them. What was your phrase? Oh, yes ... that all seems so high school. Been out of that hell for awhile now, and I don't care to go back.

Yeah, I know ... this whole sub-thread is ridiculous, and I should just leave it alone. So, I will. Have fun.

21. Interesting that Martin Lawrence and Latifah signify its downfall
when we could look to Billy Joel, Jennifer Lopez, the cast of The Simpson's, Roseanne, the cast of Will and Grace, Jay Leno, Mark Wahlberg, Cameron Diaz, etc. Even naomi Watts and Charlize Theron were on before based, in essence, only on two very good performances.

To meet the actors personally long after we're all gone, and they are for the most part. It has nothing to do with pleasing any of us who can enjoy their art now.

There was this bit on tv decades ago about a land shark that will be funny forever. THAT is really what it's all about.
