More vocalizing! ForrestGump wears black because
all his other stuff's dirty and needs to get into the washing machine.

My first salvo in an assault on Johnny Cash's catalog :D -- "Ring Of Fire" (3.8 MB MP3):

1. Excellent!

I love it! I think you've really got his voice down well, and it is a good range for you, too.

For some reason this came through better than any of the Elvis songs. There was much less background noise and distortion. Did you use a different source for the music?

By the way, you look just stunning in black. All sleek and bad-boyish sexy like. Mmmm! :9

5. Thanks!!!!!
:loveya:

I like the way you look in black...much more. Out of it, too. <--- Please excuse the mess...can't help it...

The track may have been clear because (apart from the new mic, that does help a bit,a nd the vagaries of mixing when I am just going on Mac-inspired intuition with the program) it doesn't have any soft singing at all and it kind of bullies the weird interference and so on into submission. I noticed that with the Elvis songs, too, but his vocals usually went up and down in pitch, tone, volume, etc in a single song a lot more than did Johnny's and so there's more room for noise to encroach. in other words...dunno. :D

6. Could I be the Runner-Up Man In Black, who takes over the duties of the
Primary Man In Black in the event that he should be unable to fulfill them? :D

Thank you! :loveya:

3. How did this thing get buried on page 3?
I agree with Mrs. G. Your voice is better balanced here.

Question for you: Do you have your *own* voice, or do you just imitate others? I ask, because I can mimic voices really well, and can adapt my speech to sound like any regional dialect (to fit in with the natives). I'm wondering if there's a natural "FG" voice (other than Blue Flu Christmas, that is).

7. Thanks, Ms Reverend...yep, I guess
I have my own voice. It's probably overlapping Elvis' to a great extent but his 'natural voice' undoubtedly had greater range (without falsetto), especially as he went through his thirties and entered his forties. Most of his voice, most of Johnny's voice, Jim Morrison's voice (not the screams, though...same reason I can't pull off a James Brown homage for more than a few seconds, if that), much of Tom Jones (powerful voice, though, he has), Bing Crosby's voice, and much of Roy Orbison's (he loses me sometimes when he goes really high, though) sort of fall within my natural range.

When I recorded some non-Elvis songs with guitar 21 years ago, the last (and first) time I really sang 'til I got into this, I sounded more like Elvis than anyone...probably inevitable, given his influence coinciding with the middle of my vocal range (and the fact that I've always loved the Delta blues).

"'Flu Christmas" will stand, perhaps, as my greatest single contribution to not only popular music but to Western Civilization. :D

8. Thanks, Ms Peggy!
:loveya:

I also did "Folsom Prison Blues," which is probably the one of his that I most play around with, but I didn't have the track with me so recorded it while listenign to Johnny's original...unfortunately, as is too often the case, the track that I have (though it sounds the same in terms of instruments and all that) is faster and in a different key. :-(

So I'll give that one another try next week...
