Anybody here ever work in customer service?
About a month ago, I started work at an inbound call center for a subsidiary of financial firm. We track car insurance for four major financial companies, and if someone doesn't have the required insurance amounts (full coverage when they owe on the car), we force-place insurance on the car and bill the customer.

My background is in military intelligence analysis, and I've been a military assignee to one of the nation's major intelligence agencies, so I fancy myself as someone who is highly trained and skilled. I thought I'd be kind of bummed taking a job that is perhaps a bit beneath my particular skill set.

Turns out, its awesome. I look forward to going to work. I enjoy being at work. 8 hours a day, handling phone calls from customers/insurance agents. I take between 120-150 calls a day, each lasting a few minutes. Never thought I'd find a job I'd really like in a careerfield that most people would detest being in. Strange.

1. I'm glad to hear you like your job so much. That's very cool and
a real blessing, these days. Good for you. Enjoy the mystery!

I've done lots of customer service type jobs over the years. I've done a lot of phone work, too. I like people and I like being helpful, so it's been a good combo.

:hi:

2. i liked everything about CS but the "tied to the desk with a headset"
part. I'd pace my cube, always brought up short by my 6' leash

I finally had to go do something different.............

glad you like it, it can be extremely rewarding.

in my office but I did.

I was so stressed out and treated like crap in my other section, so I decided to make a move. Well that wasn't the only reason.

I'm in training right now but am taking calls. I'm in an area with upbeat, positive people. We aren't selling anything(I work for the water utility)
My years of experience in the department have put me at an advantage to those who come in from other departments, etc, who don't have knowledge of our billing system and sometimes cannot handle the new responsibilities.
My boss and others have told me they are so happy to have me in the section due to my knowledge and experience. My new boss is great!
I'm making a healthy salary, getting great benefits, and am working with friendly, supportive people. I'm kicking myself because I could have gone into this section years ago, but at that time they had terrible managment (that has since changed!)

I feel like I can really contribute. Actually I thought I would hate talking on the phones, but really most people you talk to aren't ogres, just regular people, and if you treat them with respect, they tend to return the favour. I consider myself a bright person so don't feel demeaned at all accepting this position.

I'm counting my blessings. :)
