Any idea how much it would cost to have professional movers move
the typical contents of a big 3 bedroom 3rd floor (condo plus storage room and lots of plants, etc,)from Chicago to North Carolina? Asheville, specifically. My friend is estimating, based on her experience of moving 6 hours away, a cost of 8-$10,000.00 - could this be?? Yikes!

1. considering it cost us a few grand
to move a small house about 25 miles, I don't think that's a bad estimate.

2. It's based on weight
Estimate a $1.00 per pound. Distance is not a factor in cost, only a factor in the time it takes to arrive.

3. I don't know, but when you get here,
I can say "Howdy neighbor." I live about 200 miles southeast of Asheville in Rockingham, NC.

4. Beware of the small fry movers
Especially Starving Students. Not only do they give a false delivery time - a month longer than I was quoted-, but there's theft. I didn't find out how prevalent until afterwards. The rule of thumb for mvig is to stick with the big shots. I prefer to paronize the little guy, but why risk losing your stuff. Especially of it's sentimental or part of family history.

Another company, Shalom Movers gave me an exagerated delivery time, too. Finally, I had to cough up another hundred dollars beyond the contract price for final delivery.

5. Here's a moving calculator
that is, a computer program that helps you estimate costs, not a calculator you have to chase around the room!

7. It cost me
$2000 to move essentially nothing from Nebraska to California. No major appliances. No large furnature. Just clothes, etc. for one person...in a small 1 bedroom apartment. Distance was a factor in the price.
