Has anyone else been treated differently after changing their avatar?
I had a Dennis Kucinich avatar for a while recently and I noticed certain people (in GD) being much more aggressive in their posts to me.

Anyone else?

1. I haven't had that happen. However, I haven't had any people...
as avatars except John Conyers, who is pretty much beloved by everyone here.

5. You don't think anyone has ever made an assumption based on
your flag?

I never really thought about it before I had DK -- so maybe I didn't experience it or maybe I didn't notice it.

Before DK I had:

I voted
FDR
RFK
Wonder Woman
Hawk Girl
Star Sapphire
Santa Claus

39. I haven't sensed any negative feelings in reference to it. Actually...
now that I think about it, I have had some positive statements about it. I don't know why anyone here would object to my distress flag, though. (As you probably know, flying a flag upside down is an international symbol of distress.)

45. Oh, well - Not my problem. If it weren't considered an acceptable...
international sign of distress, then I'd see their point as having some validity. Given that it is, my avatar stays until we're out of distress.

48. I agree. I always wonder how they can not know it. Then I think "Well,
maybe I just know it because I was in search and rescue for so many years, and it's not really as commonly known as I think."

51. Before I took it, I checked it out to make sure that it was not...
disrespectful because I do love the United States. If anyone were to ever complain about it, I would tell them that fact. However, I would not debate them on the issue. Anyone who disagrees with my decision has the right to disagree. However, my avatar tells everyone how much I truly feel that our country is in peril.

42. I've never had any kind of flag as an av,
but some veterans and patriots (even if they are open-minded Democrats) are especially sensitive about its use, so I was just curious.

Glad that you have gotten positive reactions to your distress call (if only someone would come save us from the distress).

But seriously, I saw a post with a naked porn icon once, so I hit alert. I mean, there's free speech and open mindedness and all, but it just doesn't seem respectful to all members of the DU to have basically a porn picture as someone's icon. Maybe I was wrong, but I felt disturbed by it.

I wonder what the offical DU member count is as far as male/female/undeclared.

56. No, actually,
I decided to give it up when I undertook several terms as a moderator in GD. No one asked it of me, but I felt it was called for out of respect for the Administrators and my fellow moderators. I moderated just before, during and after the primaries and felt sporting the avatar of a member of DU could give the appearance of partiality during an especially contentious time. In reality, moderator actions are not so unilateral and partiality isn't likely to occur. But the appearance to those who had never moderated was still a concern, and I didn't wish to encourage any such notions.

70. Columbia Heights.
I relocated here in Sept after two years on Capitol Hill. Before DC, I bounced aorund San Diego and Los Angeles my whole life. It is grerat: a block to the metro, and walking distance to Mt. Pleasant and Adams-Morgan.

Which restaurants? My favorites are mostly holes in the wall like Capitol Hill Tandoori for Indian, Young Chow for Chinese, and Marx Cafe for the whole variety.

Do read more Vonnegut!! He is the greatest! My favorties include Slapstick, Player Piano, and Jailbird.

I don't think i ever got around to reading any Burroughs even though he was on all the recommended lists in my English classes. Any recommendations?

73. Funny. When I lived in Columbia Heights, I longed for Metro.
Those were different times.

I would be after specific meals in DC, and some of the restaurants may have gone to hell.

But I would go to the Thai Room on upper Connecticut Ave. and have Shrimp with Hot Chili and Garlic, Chicken with Ginger Root, and Crispy Noodle (which I would save for dessert).

And I would go to AV Ristorante Italiano down near 5th & NY NW and order an assortment (I would need a companion for this meal).

And I would go to Lebanese Taverna (Woodley Park or Cleveland Park? Can't remember which is which) and have hummous, sambousick, macamek, fattoush, and this incredible dry Lebanese white wine they serve.

And I would go to Montego Bay (used to be called "Negril Bakery - J-Can Patties" on 18th St) and I would have a couple of those spicy Jamaican beef patties (with the saffron-heavy crust) spackled with Jamaican hot sauce, and cooled with Jamaican cream soda.

That's for starters. I don't think Marx Cafe was open back when, and I don't remember Capitol Hill Tandoori or Young Chow, but it is a big city.

My wife has a ton of Vonnegut, so I will raid the library. Thanks for the mandate to do so.

And I might be blaspheming, but as far as Burroughs goes, I can't recommend a complete novel, though I have read most of them. His value for me is as a cultural figure (a fore-runner of Beat, post-war artistic movements, Punk, and Industrial music), an anti-authoritarian crank, and as a dystopian writer of unheralded comedy sketches. I would start with a collection like the older Penguin William Burroughs Reader (which I bought at Kramerbooks, uninterestingly enough) or the new William Burrough Reader, edited by James Grauerholz, whom some Burroughs fans can't stand. And if any of the collected fragments interest you, by all means carry on.

Others would suggest you start with Naked Lunch.

Anyway, best to you. I'm sure you have plenty to read and eat, but I get sentimental about DC. Haven't spent much time in Southern California, but that will probably change.

74. It has been lovely to meet you, swag.
Of the reastaurants you mention, I have only eaten at Lebanese Taverna (and thoroughly enjoyed it). AV Ristorante Italiano is still around, but I have not been there though I have heard good things. I have no knowledge of the others.

Thanks for the Burroughs recommendations (and Kramerbooks is not all that uninteresting, at least it is independent, right? and it has good late night eats--still a rarity in this city--it is no NY when it comes to that).

No lurking in the Night Owls thread for me tonight; I'm tired and must ge to bed so I can be bright-eyed and bushy tailed and ready to fight the Republicans tomorrow.

G'nite and have a pleasant tomorrow!

72. I feel like I don't even know you any more!
;)

I got rid of the golf cart once. There was a near-riot. Seriously.

78. What did you replace the golf cart with?
And are you a big time golfer or is there another explanation for your cute little golf dude?

Yeah, if I was a bit tech savvy, I'd write some kind of a script so that my av could change itself weekly. Then you wouldn't know me at all! :hi:

How 'bout nobody challenging Lloyd for CD 25? Awesome news, isn't it?

77. Not this one (no one here in the US knows who it is) but
after Johnny Ramone died, I had the Ramones seal as my avatar for a while - I got a few PMs from other fans. That was cool.

81. Aha! Someone took the bait!
It's from the BCC 2 show Top Gear; the guy's nickname is The Stig and he's the F1 driver who race tests a good number of the cars on the show. My avatar is of the second Stig; the first one lost his anonymity in the press and so the producers located another one. Or maybe it's all a put-on and the second Stig is the same gentleman as the first, but in a white suit instead of a black one.
