Poll question: Do you respect people with more extreme views than your own?
I don't mean different, as in fundamentalist views, I mean, for instance, if you are pro-environment and drive a hybrid, do you have greater respect for someone who goes to extremes to avoid usuing a car at all? Or if you are a carnivorous animal rights sympathizer, do you have greater respect for an extreme vegan (not necessarily PETA, let's skip that whole debate) who won't wear leather? Or do you think anyone more extreme than you is just too extreme?

Leave out anyone who feels they have to convert you to their beliefs. Just include people who live their own life without feeling everyone has to be like them.

No idea why I'm asking. Just bored, I guess.

:silly:

Edit: Not that choosing not to wear leather or eat animal products is extreme. It's just a decision, is all.

5. Ah
 Extremism is always the line just beyond what we do, isn't it? I use leather products and eat some dairy, so I think I'm pretty moderate. Of course, in Texas they think I'm wacko! (My attempt to make biodiesel for my 23 year old car didn't help!)

Actually, I understand what you mean, though. My least favorite reaction to people finding out I'm vegetarian is the question "Can you eat shrimp (fish, oysters, etc)?" Ever heard that one? :sarcasm: Of course, the answer is "I CAN eat anything, I choose not to."

2. Where is the "I admire extremists even if they disagree with my opinion"
option?

6. Actually, I started to include something like that
And a couple more variations, but I didn't, because then I'd have had several yes and several no options, and then the answers wouldn't be as meaningful. I guess I should have left number one less qualified, though.

3. Everything in moderation.
You're going to have extremists for every cause. You can't please everybody.

8. As Ben Franklin said, "Everything in moderation" is too extreme.
Paraphrased, to fit in the subject line. I think the actual quote was "Everything in moderation is moderation in the extreme." And it might not have been Ben Franklin, but who cares? :-)

4. My dear jobycom!
I do respect people with more extreme views than my own.....

I think that they have more courage, more something going on....

And they can be out there with their beliefs...while I wander among the hedges, trying to find my way out of the maze....

I can be a scardy cat about my beliefs.....sometimes.

:hi:

7. Yes, unless they try to cram them down my throat
or make me wrong for not being as extreme as they are. For the most part, though, they have shown me respect because I show them the same.

9. Not necessarily.
Some people make choices that I am unwilling to make but that doesn't make them any more worthy of my respect. I try to take how someone treats me personally before I bestow my respect upon them. It might be one piece of earning my respect, but not the only piece.

The Longhorns won the National Title!!!:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

AGGGHHHH!!! Forgive me, I don't know where that came from!! I meant the first part more than the second!

14. LOL!! I could have done without the live cut-ins to the party during the
NFL games today. If I'd wanted to see that, I'd have gone down there or watched the webcast. Do the TV stations here realize that some of us don't care? Of course not, we've all drank the orange kool-aid. :argh:

22. I know, I hated that. I actually turned the game off when they did it
My tv just isn't big enough to view both screens, and I didn't really care about either team, anyway.

16. Sometimes, yes.
I also respect some people with more moderate views.

It really all depends on their choice of aftershave.

23. Damn I miss that
Ever hear the country song "Bubba Hyde," by Diamond Rio?

Barney works down at the a&p
He drives a baby blue a.m.c.
Ain’t missed of day of work in 13 years
He’s a fire department volunteer

He’s got a yard that’s always just been mowed
Collected stamps since he was 10 years old
You’ve never seen a more regular guy
But when the sun goes down on friday night

Chorus

Slaps on his hai karate after shave
Puts on his elvis jacket custom-made
Gets in his patent leather zebra boots
Fires up his super sport malibu
He burns the rubber ’cross the county line
A honky tonkin’ fool till closing time
You ought to see him metamorphosize
From barney jekyll into bubba hyde

Monday morning it’s a suit and tie
Attention shoppers there’s a two-for-one buy
Tuesday afternoon he mans the wheel
Makes his round in the bookmobile

He’s got a wednesday night canasta game
Thursday’s the tourney at the bowling lanes
His friends would freak out if they only knew
The party animal he turns into

19. Yes, but not because their view is extreme.
The view itself suffices.

Now, lose the inferiority complex.

24. I respect folk with any views - provided they can back them up.
Left, right, moderate, extreme - if you can provide a reason for holding your views, and you stick to your conscience then I will happily respect you - even if I fervently disagree.

I'm a big free speech person, as long as it doesn't turn violent. In this country, there aren't a whole lot more to the left than me.
