Do you get today off work?
I think I'm right in thinking that today is Martin Luther King Day, but it looks like some folk are at work.....

How widespread is this holiday?

I ask because on U.K. bank holidays pretty much all offices are closed.

4. I have the day off today and it's lovely.
But I did have to work on Saturday, so it ends up being like a regular weekend.

Since I generally work 6 days a week, having the extra day is excellent.

9. We have one "floating" holiday
It's either on Columbus Day, MLK, or used to make July 4th into a long weekend. This year, it's going to be used to extend 4th of July into a 4-day weekend.

Almost all of my clients (big pharma) are closed. All government offices, banks and schools are closed. Our church's religious school (Quaker) is open so the kids can do public service projects in honor of the holiday.

14. Funny thing...schools are evenly split here. My daughter (who goes
to a private high school) has the day off. My son (who goes to a public elementary) has school today...but he's out sick. The school's "official standing" on the matter is (because we have a fairly diverse neighborhood) that they can teach more to the children about MLK then the children would learn by having the day off. Funny how they get President's day off though.

16. Lawyers have no soul, so we're working...
Doesn't feel right to me that they make us work on this holiday. Seems very disrespectful to Dr. King, in my opinion. Courts are closed but these pricks insist on everyone being here...

21. No
Those racists jerks. I guess that they figure that since there isn't a large black community around here that the day isn't important.
