I took my kids with me to the University Bookstore to get my textbooks
and it was INSANE! It was SO busy in there. My little guy didn't want to be carried around (and I SOOO enjoyed carting around his thirty pound ass for half an hour:eyes:). He flipped around in my arms and yelled and flailed while we stood at the checkout, because I wouldn't put him down. Some other students kept turning around and peeking at us, so I finally announced,

"This is why you should finish college BEFORE you have children!"

So I got my books today :bounce: AND offered a valid PSA to my younger college counterparts. I'm done now. No more productivity for me. It's all slack until bedtime!

2. Good for you, my dear Lara!
It takes energy and determination to do what you're doing......

Stick with it! Show those bastards....whoever they are.....that you have what it takes!

PSA? What's that?

Which classes are you going to take?

:loveya:  :pals:

4. Thanks Peg!
I got a good laugh out of it, because some of them looked shocked, and some of them laughed. The ones who laughed- they'll make good parents some day.

I only have a couple of classes this semester. I may try full-time in the fall. Right now I have a public speaking course and "Advanced Writing; Arts and Letters."

I can't wait until the kids go to bed so I can start reading my books.:bounce:

5. OMG.
I would have forgiven you if you had been at our book store here. I normally run from children and anyone who has them for stress reduction purposes. You handled that nicely. That was a good one.

10. I've learned humor is a good diffuser.
Getting pissed off, would've just aggravated the situation. I'm damn glad I don't have to bring my kids with very often, though!

7. did anyone try the "undergrads look younger every year" line on you?
It's the one we use around our department when someone brings the kids to school (even funnier when the children are having an outburst!).

11. I'm quite adept at making smart-ass comments, where my kids are concerned.
It's absolutely necessary for face-saving purposes. The three of them have taught me a number of invaluable social skills.

15. and it's a great lesson for the kids ...
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 05:16 PM by Lisa
Way to go, Lara! I know three different families with moms who have mastered snappy repartees, and use them in lieu of brutal ego-crushing, spanking ... or caving in completely to the kids. In all these cases, the children have turned out very well -- good-natured, have an appreciation of irony, and are thoughtful and considerate. (In one case, a favorite saying -- "Don't talk when I'm interrupting!" -- has been passed on to the new generation. One of the grandkids came out with it at the table during holiday dinner, and everyone cracked up.)

18. I'll be there tommorrow
although I have a question--why do I always buy the texts, and then never read them?

A trick I have is to stall for a day or so and let the crowd thin ot a bit. Sounds like you wanted to get started right away though! Good for you.

However, for me, doing things half-assed is what got me where I am today--so I don't plan on changing! ;)

19. Hey.

I know we don't "talk" much on here, but I have to tell you that I am always so impressed by your grace under pressure. Which, granted, is oftentimes cleverly disguised as "sarcasm under constraints." :) But seriously, I admire the way you handle stress in the challenges you face. I do not always handle stress with such panache, but I aspire to that level of competence, confidence and wisdom, and you set a great example for me. Just wanted you to know that.

Thank you.

20. Thank you!
and know full well that sometimes I curl up in the fetal position and bawl like a baby, when no one is looking! Actually, the only situations I really, really fail in are those where I can't employ humor to get myself through.

I contend that we could bitch-slap the hell out of the republican party if we could outwit and out-humor them in the face of the general public. It's far easier to win a person's heart if you can make them smile.
