Quite the funeral procession going by the house,
I stopped counting at 16 fire trucks and 14 police cars.

2. I do not know,
I had heard nothing on the local news.

And as of now, the trucks and cars are still rolling by.

Thousands pay tribute to fallen Ann Arbor firefighter
Manchester woman's funeral was at Crisler Arena

Fallen Ann Arbor firefighter Amy Schnearle-Pennywitt was eulogized this morning as a wonderful co-worker, daughter wife and friend at her funeral in Crisler Arena on the University of Michigan campus.

Thousands of firefighters from as far away as Cincinnati came to pay tribute to Schnearle-Pennywitt, 34, of Manchester, who died Friday of injuries she received when she was hit by a pickup truck while helping injured motorists Jan. 7 along I-94 in Ann Arbor during an ice storm.

(second story at link page)

Ann Arbor firefighter Amy Schnearle-Pennywitt, 34, died Friday at the University of Michigan Medical Center, six days after she was struck by a pickup as she was responding to a crash scene on I-94.

Schnearle-Pennywitt of Manchester was the first female firefighter killed in the line of duty in Washtenaw County, said Ann Arbor Fire Battalion Chief Mike French. She was one of 13 women in the 94-member department.

Schnearle-Pennywitt was taken to U-M on Jan. 7 with closed head injuries, a punctured lung and broken ribs. She was removed from life support Thursday afternoon. She died about 8:30 a.m. Friday.

No one has been charged in the accident.

4. How sad
That reminds me of a funeral here several years ago for two cops from St. Paul who were shot (along with one police dog) in the line of duty. Some low-life shot the first cop and during the manhunt shot the other and then had to shoot the dog several times as the dog tried to "get" him. In the procession there were hundreds of police cars from all over with their lights flashing along with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on their horses (they just happened to be in town for a show). I don't think there was a dry eye in Minnesota that day.

BTW -- the lowlife was caught and is now rotting in jail.

16. The last Firefighter's funeral I attended...
was a friend I'd both fought fires with and visited with almost daily for years. He was killed in an accident on the way to a fire. Firefighters came from hundreds of miles, including Houston's Bagpipers.

19. I forgot about the bagpipers
Yes, it was a sad day. I have a tote bag with Laser's (that was the name of the dog) name and a picture of a German shepherd that was sold to help support the St. Paul K-9 unit.

14. It was quite a tribute,
first were the motorcycle police, then fire trucks, then the hearse, a charter bus of mourners, and then a 25 minute line of police, fire, volunteer fire, and civilian vehicles.

Scio Church Rd. is not accustomed to such traffic, especially out by Chelsea.

9. Firefighters & cops are great about showing up, even for retirees
My uncle was Chief of the Radnor (small town) Fire Company years and years and years ago. When he died, the company put up black bunting, and sent a truck to lead the funeral procession. Two good-looking kids, one guy and one girl, gave up their evening to stand at attention by the casket at the viewing. I made a point to tell both them how much it meant to his family, and how important the Fire Company was to his life.

Sorry to hear about the Ann Arbor fire fighter

11. RIP
That's sad, but I'm glad they caught the person who killed her.

A few years ago, when I was driving through Portland, Oregon, they were having the funeral service for a female police officer who had been shot and killed during a raid on a drug house. All along the freeway and overpasses, cars were parked, the drivers and passengers standing outside their cars, waiting for the procession to go by. So, I joined them, to pay my respects to this woman who gave her life in the line of duty. Normally, I want to get from Seattle to Eugene ASAP, but that day, I felt I could have stood there for hours to honor this woman.
