Is this "rather pudgy"?
Someone made that statement and I am baffled by it. I am not talking about taste in clothing or talent or anything. Purely on appearance, is this what we've become that, as a society THIS is considered "rather pudgy"?

What are your thoughts?

2. No, but it looks that way because the dress is cut too small.
Ladies, please wear clothes that fit. Dresses that are tighter than sausage casings flatter no one.

9. Agreed. The dress is not so flattering. But, I would hardly classify
that as "rather pudgy". She's healthy; not anorexic. And we wonder what drives young women to eating disorders.

75. A concur
the dress is too small, especially in the chest. She's hanging out of the sides of it. It looks like it's too small, and therefore makes her look "big".

She's not big. She's perfectly healthy-looking.

And, it's not that someone CALLED her "rather pudgy", but that we MUST EXPECT celebrities to be "celebrity anorexic" or we call them "rather pudgy".

I wish she had worn something w/ a gentler cut instead. Most women, especially those w/ curves, do not look good in something that is worn as a second skin. Something that flows a bit more would have been much better and would have really flattered what she has.

11. Well,
"women, especially those w/ curves, do not look good in something that is worn as a second skin. "

I disagree with that. A second skin is often great. The issue here is that it's too narrow to be a second skin.

14. I don't know.
I have curves and a "second skin" look does not look very good on me. It tends to make me look shorter and heavier than I really am. It doesn't look good on most women because it shows every flaw.
I'm not calling for bulky, layered clothes by any means. In her case she needed a dress that fit better, was made for her figure and maybe some different support garments. A good support garment can make all the difference in the way a dress looks.

Because woman's work is never done
and is underpaid or unpaid or boring or
repetitious and we're the first to get fired
and what we look like is more important
than what we do and if we get raped it's
our fault and if we get beaten we must have
provoked it and if we raise our voices we're
nagging bitches and if we enjoy sex we're
nymphos and if we don't we're frigid and if
we love women it's because we can't get a
"real" man and if we ask our doctor too many
questions we're neurotic and/or pushy and
if we expect childcare we're selfish and if we
stand up for our rights we're aggressive and
"unfeminine" and if we don't we're typical
weak females and if we want to get married
we're out to trap a man and if we don't we're
unnatural and because we still can't get an
adequate safe contraceptive but men can walk
on the moon and if we can't cope or don't
want a pregnancy we're made to feel
guilty about abortion and...for lots and lots
of other reasons we are part of the
women's liberation movement.

53. I hope
that you're doing ok health-wise -- even a little regurgitation sounds troubling.

Holding people to unrealistic standards of appearance is a monstrosity, IMO.

But so is our society's wide-spread fixation on superficial things, not things of real worth, like a person's good character or their abilities. This can lead nowhere good, I think.

However, the offensive remark may have been the result of some personal dislike, written without consideration of the broader implications.

It would, however, perhaps have been better left unsaid.

42. I think she looks hot.
And healthy too. Her arms and chest look like she's actually been working out a little, which is a nice compliment to the girl curves.

I bet my husband would love that picture, and wouldn't think she was "pudgy" at all. In my experience, the people that think curvy girls are fat are always other women who are a little insecure about themselves. Most of the guys I've known in my life would think they were in heaven to date a girl with a bod like Mariah Carey has in this picture (although she is a psycho and dresses like a hoochie mama, but that's another story).

And BTW, in my early twenties I had this kind of figure (5'5", about 135-140, all curves), and I literally had to beat the men away from my doorstep. I could have had a date any night of the week if I wanted at that time in my life. That was definitely not the case when I weighed 110 lbs as a teenager - even though I was a size 0-2 and had a body like most Hollywood starlets (lollipop head on a little stick body). I wish the movie/TV industry would get a fucking clue and realize that anorexia is not actually attractive, and quit trying so hard to make all of us believe that it is.

If you're man who likes a little BOOM-ba-pa, BOOM-ba-pa when a healthy girl walks out in a formal dress, it's perfect. (Quoth Jack Lemmon looking at Marilyn Monroe's satin-wrapped ass in "Some Like It Hot": "It's like Jell-o on springs!")

61. NOTE: I don't think the remark was meant in ANY way to be offensive.
What struck a chord with me was that some label a curvy, healthy woman as "rather pudgy".

That bothers me.

62. Mariah does not look pudgy in that photo but..
I saw her yesterday and it looked like she had a double chin and her arms looked fleshy, not toned.
So if your friend's comment was not based on that photo but on other pictures of her last night, I might agree with her.

63. FABulous shoulders!
And hips (Hips!) and arms. Drool.

I could get seriously aroused by that photo if I could forget it's Mariah Carey.

I hypothesize that guys who claim to prefer stick chicks are submitting to peer pressure. No normal male really wants a woman who might snap in half.

65. I think many teenage boys prefer very thin women,
and a majority of men prefer a more rounded form. That's just my unscientific observation, of course.

67. Yeah, because men don't succumb to peer pressure as easily
In their teens and well into their 20s, guys are petrified of hearing, "Ew, you like that fat chick??" Unless a guy at that age is uncommonly independent of thought, he'll pretend to lust after Ticonderogas lest his underwear get hung from a flagpole.

It also bothers me that some Women of Substance fall into the trap, too, resorting to justifications such as "More cushion for the pushin'." It's the 22-pounders who should justify their anorexia, not the women who look like women.

Note that I'm not going sideways on women who are naturally thin. I'm talking about those who put effort into conforming to a ridiculous, dangerous stereotype. Everyone should look exactly as they feel natural and comfortable.

And why don't guys get saddled with similar stupid standards?

The dress doesn't make her look fat, imo. But it does squeeze her and make it look like a sausage.

73. There are plenty of reasons to criticize her, but her body is not one...
...of them.

I know women who would give anything to have her figure. And sadly, it's not because they want to be more healthy or have more energy, but because they think that fat women are not valuable.

When are we going to get beyond this?

89. Yes, quite pudgy.
Considering it is a known fact she is sucking the life out of herself to squeeze into that dress which is probably 2 sizes too small. Her arms and her pouchy stomach look fat and you can see the cellulite on her thighs through the dress. If she wore something her size (and more age-appropriate), she would look much better.

Other than that, the rest was opinion, which you asked for and you got. If you only wanted people to confirm what you already thought, why did you ask for others' opinions? In a crowd this big, surely there will be some who disagree with you. And when they do, one can't honestly act surprised or offended. Don't ask if you can't handle a variety of opinions.

I think she looks fat. Sorry.

104. She's probably still in the "healthy" weight, but as you say...
Her body fat % is likely in the "overweight" category. I believe she is 5'9'' and the maximum healthy weight for a woman that tall is 168 lbs. My best friend from high school is 5'5'' and around 130 pounds, and I feel fairly comfortable saying Mariah Carey looks like she's at least 168-175.

I think she's barely in the overweight category, but I definitely think she's there. She doesn't look healthy to me, she looks out of shape.

Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 11:14 PM by friesianrider
Something about her body is just...off, and I can see her gut hanging out and over a little.

For me personally, if I were a man, I'd say she looks pudgy. I wouldn't not date her because of it or anything but she doesn't look in shape to me, she just looks a little...well, pudgy and out of shape. To me, that doesn't only look pudgy, it looks unhealthy. But that's just me...don't throw vegetables, please! :)

It's too bad, really. With better tastes, she could give Halle Berry a run for her money. Now, Halle...she's got it.
