Poll question: Greatest Black Flag LP
I don't have enough room to list every Black Flag release, so I'll stick to the studio LP releases and full-length compilations.

1. Loose Nut gets my vote.
I used to work 6 hour shifts at a Vietnamese restaurant as a dishwasher. I would listen to this 35 minute album for 6 hours straight. It's burned into my brain. Great punk album.

3. I feel the same way about side 2 of "My War."
My "loud and fast" teenage headbanger mentality was thrown for a loop when I first heard it. I never realized playing so slow could be so punk.

2. Damaged.
I know it's not exactly the most esoteric choice, but it's my favorite.

5. Damaged is sort of like a greatest hits record with Rollins singing.
But it's solid.

6. Kira's got the 10 and a half! Kira's got the 10 and a half!
And when you bend over, and let Kira come over... She'll make you scream - she'll give you a hard time that you won't believe.

She and Rollins didn't get along so well. :(

10. Rollin's felt most of his band-mates didn't like him.
According to "Get in the Van", and apparently the feeling was shared amongst the young Flagists. The amount of touring they did - it's no shocker.

Of course now it would seem they're all kissy-kissy - which is how grown-ups act.

19. I suspect that Rollins and Ginn are both assholes.
My only reasons for thinking this are some of the things Rollins has said, and they way Ginn behaved with Negativland over the "U2" fiasco.

I attended one of Rollins' early "spoken-word" performances, and I've never been so bored in my life. It was like Thanksgiving with the drunken uncle nobody has the nerve to tell to shut up.

25. From everything I"ve heard Ginn is an asshole...
Even people who heap praise on him seem to say so. I love the book "Our Band Could Be Your Life" by Michael Azzerrad, and the Black Flag chapter in there is amazing. But you see how Ginn's work ethic and his penchant for pot took it's toll on the band and each other.

35. I listened to a spoken-word cd by Rollins...once.
Or maybe it was supposed to be comedy...I really can't remember because it was really unmemorable.

On the other hand, "T.V. Party Tonight" usually ends up on any mixed cd I burn.

That one's a personal favorite, too.

I just realized that "You bet we've got something personal against you" is about the Circle Jerks stealing "I don't Care."

My 10-year-old loves TV Party. It was fun to listen to him sing this song when he was 4 years old:

"We gots . . . nothing better to dooo
Then to have a TV Party . . .and have a couplea brooos"

I miss those days.

17. Kudos to Black Flag from your labelmate Husker DU!
(Don't you guys still owe the Huskers some dough? Just kidding Greg!) I voted for Damaged BTW.

When I saw the mighty Flag (along with about 40 others) at a park in my crappy hometown, I sure as hell never thought they would ever get the respect they surely deserved.

20. Bootleg: "My War Demos 1982."
It's got a version of "My War" with Dukowski on bass and Cadena/Ginn on guitars that just RIPS the official version to shreds. In 1982, there was no better band on the planet.

But my official favorite of the legit releases has to be a tie bewteen "Everything Went Black" and "Family Man." I'm a sucker for the instrumentals (they were an underrated, and early "jam band." The Dead influence is clear on this album.)

27. I had a bootleg recording called "Live at Arhaus" that just ripped.
It was recorded in early 1983, when they were still a 5-piece. It was pretty good quality for a multi-generation tape recording.

24. I was the only one to pick the First Four Years...
Goddamn, I know it's a compilation but those fucking songs are unstoppable more than 25 years later. If The First Four Years is excluded as a compilation then Damaged gets the vote. I can't believe how many people on here picked the latter material.

Having gotten to see Black Flag live is a badge of honor for me and one of my favorite moments ever.

30. Damaged
The band never sounded better, though "My War" has it's moments, too.

For all Minutemen/Black Flag fans, you really ought to find the album that Mike Watt and Kira made called "Dos"; just 2 excellent bass players and Kira's voice. "Taking Away The Fire" is one of my favorite songs of all-time..

34. Well, the songs were decent, but the production was, uh....
"Absolute wretched shit" might be the most generous way I can put it. Flag had one producer who could record them (Spot) and when they let Ginn take the reins, pothead blechiness ensued. The sound on "In My Head" is so dated and reverbed that it sounds like outtakes bootlegged from a TSOL demo.

It's a shame, too, since Flag were hitting upon a kind of dub-metal-prog gestalt with their material at that point. Had they let Spot (or Lee Perry - JUST IMAGINE!) sit in the producer's chair for that one, it might have been a fitting Swan Song.

No, this is not a cheap excuse to post a caricature I did of Mr. Rollins.

Not at all.
