I'm sitting in on my son's speech team practice... |
|
They're District Competition is on Saturday and they're preparing to record their piece (he's doing a radio broadcast).
So, talk to me....the kids are doing great but I've already been here for 1 1/2 hours and they're going for another hour or so...:wow:

1. I did one tournament of radio back in high school. |
|
I received low marks because of the stories I chose to cover.

5. The coach chooses the content |
|
except the fun feature and the commercial.
They are WAY over their time limit right now and they have to go record in one hour :wow:

12. Coaches didn't use to. |
|
Students like myself are the reason why they choose the content now.

Nothing like getting pulled out in the middle of competing when you're reading an short about tampon being used incorrectly and the consequences.

2. Do you ever get roped into judging? |
|
My mom always hated having to do that when I was in speech.

6. Nah, too busy following the kids around to judge |
|
They usually find judges who don't have kids competing.

4. They're doing a radio news broadcast |
|
My son does the weather (he did the weather in the TV news broadcast last year, so he feels comfortable).
The sports story is about how the Hawkeyes got SCREWED in their bowl game
Local news is about a recent murder-suicide
they're fun part is a psychic call in show.
The best part? National news is about Abramoff . :bounce:

8. He's 17, a Junior and this is his second year on speech team |
|
The kids are now 80 seconds over on their piece - they have 45 minutes before they record...aaaccckkk
They're so funny - everyone is arguing about whose piece should be cut down to fit the time. (We just cut a minor segway in the weather - my son's pissed, he said, "I've only got 45 seconds as it is".) Ahh, teamwork. :P

9. Is your son interested in doing something later in life |
|
in broadcasting, or that involves public speaking?
(I'll bet he's really cool, knowing his mom!)
:)

You'd think with all the radio/newspaper/tv interviews his Dad does and political involvement our family has he'd be dead set on Poli-Sci or Broadcast journalism.
Reality? He wants to be a play-by-play guy for professional wrestling. :yoiks: (He's really good at it :7)

11. Cool! I used to do dramatic interp at speech tournaments |
|
Happy memories of getting high afterwards in some stairwell with my friend Danny Weller after we were sure we wouldn't be getting any awards (and thus having to get up and do our piece one more time).
One of the good reasons for having a Mom at the proceedings!!!
