What would you have done in this situation??
My father plays guitar and loves it when other people want to learn. One of the kids in the neighborhood was taking guitar lessons and, being the nice guy that my father is, he lent the kid one of his electric guitars.

So, the kid has the guitar for a couple of years; my father knows where it is and figures that when he wants it back, the kid will give it to him. My nephew starts taking guitar lessons and my father wants to give the borrowed electric guitar to him. He goes to the neighborhood kid and tells him he would like the guitar back.

The kid looks at my father and starts to stammer.
My father asks him, "What's wrong? Did something happen to the guitar?"
Kid (now an adult, by the way): "Uhm...I sold it."
Father: "What? You sold it? It wasn't yours to sell!!"
Dumbass kid: "I figured that since I had it for so long, you forgot I had it."

My father was livid, but kept his cool. I asked him if he at least got the money from the kid for the guitar. Of course, he didn't.

It wasn't an expensive guitar or anything, but my father really wanted my nephew to have it.

Is the kid that sold the guitar an idiot, or am I wrong?

For those of you who know guitars -- it was an old Yamaha like this one only red:

7. That's what I said!! The dumb ass kid should have offered to
buy my father a new guitar!

My father let it go, though. No way I could let something like that go.

2. Wow. the kid's a total idiot.
sounds like bad-parenting to me. At the very least, he should've checked with your dad before selling it!! The audacity!! :eyes:

4. The kid is an asshole and a thief.
By his own admission, "I figured that since I had it for so long, you forgot I had it."

He knew selling it was wrong.

5. Um,yes the kid was an idiot! And so were his parents!
Wow......the nerve of that kid......

And too bad, too, since your dad will likely not be so generous in the future.....

The money worth of the guitar is nearly irrelevant, IMHO....

He just should NOT have sold it....under any circumstances.....

Wow...

:grr:

12. well, I just bought this guitar from some kid...
:)

I'm ok; finally have a couple days off in a row, so I'm catching up on station stuff and putting away all the Christmas Decorations in our Fibber McGee-style closet; oy!

I'm really being blown away by the CD Iron And Wine and Calexico made together called "In The Reins"; "History Of Lovers" and the title track are fantastic. I'd really recommend that..

14. Did the kid appear to be an idiot??
Thanks for the recommendation!

Something made me think of you the other day. There was the story of Barry Cowsill's body being found, which made me think of the Continental Drifters, which made me think of Peter Holsapple, which made me think of "Mavericks" which made me think of you.

I said, "Damn, where the hell has Enigmatic been?"

17. That was so sad..
Did you hear about Bryan Harvey (of House Of Freaks) and his family being murdered on New Year's Day? What a horrible thing...

18. I started to read about it in the paper and never got to finish the
article. I didn't realize he was in House of Freaks until I read your post about the murders.

Very strange story...and so sad.

9. I believe that this is an example of Conversion.
It's tortious law (I hope I said that right), and whereas you've made the demand, it would appear you have legal recourse.

I'd at least demand what the little brat sold it for, which, not knowing value, was probably next to nothing.

20. It happens. I loaned my neighbors a bunch of stuff-
never saw any of it back. I guess they "adopted" it. Different neighbors too. Now, when any neighbor asks me for anything-I just say I don't have it. A lot of people are assholes.

21. The kid shouldn't done that. But on the other hand
if he becomes famous, your father can say "I gave him his first guitar." :)

Or if the kid gets famous and the National Enquirer is interviewing your father, he can say, "He stole his first guitar from me."

22. if you father specifically lent it to him...and didn't give it to him
then the kid is a jerk...and from the kid's comment "I figured that since I had it for so long, you forgot I had it." I would say he is a jerk.

25. He probably could, but my father wouldn't go through the trouble.
He is really easy going and, although he was pissed, he won't do anything.
