Anyone know of a liquid, preferably something that is more or less easy to come by, with a boling point lower than that of waters, which is 212 degrees? I'm doing a project which requires the heating of a liquid to boiling, but with the resources I'm using, water is slightly impratical. I'd appriciate any thoughts and ideas, thx.

4. Yeah, you want something as close to pure alcohol as you can get |
|
Liquor has too much extra stuff in it. Though if you have something like Everclear, that works.
But yeah, denatured alcohol is fine. I think the boiling point is around 180 Fahrenheit.

6. Cool! that's considerably better than water, which |
|
in these circumstances using, would take about 8 minutes to boil one gram of water (1/8 a tsp i believe was the figure I came out with). Appreciate the response

It's a science fair project. I'm positioning lasers so that they are all directed to a central point (a testube with a liquid in it). The idea is to compare the efficincy of using lasers to heat as opposed to more "conventional" means. Because lasers don't come very powerful (well, they do, but they get real expensive, REAl quick) we're getting about 80mW of energy from 16 5mW lasers. As you can see, when your dealing with such a small amopunt of energy, each little bit helps.
Also, do you know what a good source of pure, or concentrated methanol is? E.I. Like Acetone is nail polish remover?

You guys are better ;) You also tend to get better or more thoroughly explained info by asking someone as opposed to reading something in my experience.
