DU musicians: Name some bands you've been in.
Not a "famous" contest here; just interested to see how creative (or stupid) you've been at naming your bands (or having someone else name them).

My dumbest was "Bucksnort Trout Farm;" quickly realizing that it was a stupid name, I changed it to "Austin-Western." Yeah, I know the name-the-band-after-a-construction-equipment-company thing had been done before, but I still think it was a good name for a Texas country-music band.

"Shades of Green" worked well for my Irish band, since it had one full-blood Irishwoman; me, who is half Irish; and a guy who wasn't Irish at all.

The Celtic-Bluegrass fusion thing I caled "Caledonia," not because we did that much Scottish music, but because I liked it.

There were others, but these are the ones I remember most.

God damn it, I miss being able to play. Wish I hadn't thought about this.

3. I drummed for the Beatles before Ringo; then I was a guitarist for Floyd,
but went insane and they booted me out; then I died while a member of The Who; then I drummed for Rush before Peart came on; I was guitarist for a band called "The Experience" until choked on my own vomit; I was lead singer for The Mamas and the Pappas, until I choked on a ham sandwich; then I drummed for Led Zeppelin until I choked on my own vomit; and finally I headed up Nirvana before killing myself.

10. Surgical Steel, Dead Pirates, Pubic Lobster
SS was straight Thrash.

Dead Pirates was an offensive comedy Thrash/Blues band.

Pubic Lobster was also an offensive comedy metal band. All the same members as the Pirates but we switched instruments and opened up for ourselves.

I love playing out and a few times a year we'll book a show at a local club and rip the other bands playing the droning garbage music of today that passes for Hard Rock/Metal.

20. Actually, you've got it wrong
I've tried and tried to play guitar but it's too abstract for me. I mean, middle C is always in one spot or one fingering on other instruments. On a guitar, it can be many places. I can't deal with that...

Hard to explain. I just can't do it.

Not for lack of trying. Guitars are easier to have around than pianos and cheaper than bassoons. I never owned my own because in the late 70's, bassoons were 4 grand.

61. Another bassoonist?
I thought we were a dying breed.

I bought my own in the mid 80's, a Kohlert made in Slovakia in the 1920's. At the time it was only $1,200. I recently refinished it, and had it appraised at $9,000.

But during my "professional" career (the Army Band), I usually played on Fox instruments. They make some good ones, the 601 is top quality. But at $17,000 I could never buy my own.

66. I always wanted a Fox.
Couldn't afford a Heckel or a Puchner (no idea how to spell either after this long!) I always used school instruments. I'm sure I could find a deal, but at the time, my parents couldn't afford one at all with 3 kids in college at once.

35. I was bass-man for the '66-'68 Auburn Knights
As a union musician, in those years, I worked for Bobby Vinton, Tommy James, Si Zetner, and others.

My best concerts and "sides" were with the "Knights." However, I remember well that night - in the old Auburn gym/arena - when I played bass for Bobby Vinton. The place was packed (date-night for the big-time greeks). We opened with a Basie-esque tune (from Vinton's book), that ended with my jazz pianist and I bringing down the house, with then-idol Bobby Vinton calling me "Paul Newman," and my piano partner from the Auburn Knights "Count Basie." The frat and sorority queeks didn't get it, but the band did. Juliard-trained oboist Bobby Vinton worked the band like a glove for the rest of the evening..

Vinton was cool enough to go with our lyrics to Basie's "Salt Peanuts .. Salt Peanuts." We sang, with Bobby, "Soft Pen-us, Soft Pe-Nus!" The frat-ties crooned. They never knew the difference! Did you?

It was great then. Now it is memories. Another of the best in the band and the times that paralleled me into and out of Vietnam.

Mac

but the violist objected because she wasn't "that way". She was pretty conservative, so I guess she was referring to the rumored affairs with other women. I was pretty disappointed with her obvious preoccupation with sex...

Garage-band, we never played a gig, etc...
And I actually spent a few weeks rehearsing with a band called "Universal Mind";
and they actually had a gig or two, but I only found out later,
because everyone else had a secret meeting and agreed to not tell me.

tinny, neutered, motorhead distortion setting, and played a little Scruggs: WALL OF NOISE. i do not recommend this. unless you are planning on covering Dismembered or Mortician.

my fuzzpedal makes it sound pretty good though: "twang-chy" is the only thing i can equate it too.

and it sounds fine when you play stairway to heaven. always thought stairway sounded too nintendo when i picked it, but sounds reasonable with a little grrr.
