Furnace experts? Help!! Am I going to burn the house down?!? |
|
:D
Seriously, there's this burning smell coming out of the intake vents, stinking up the whole upstairs. I went to check the furnace, it lights, but the blower don't go, so I figger the blower motor burned out.
I figger that knowing next to nothing about this.
Anyhow, I turned the thermostat down to 45 in the hopes it won't fire up again. Is that enough for me to live through the night so a repair person can come in the morning? Or should I unplug the thing?

1. Can't you just turn it off? |
|
Can't you go to the thermostat and set it to "off"?

2. Go to your fusebox and turn off the main 'breaker' switch. |
|
Odds are, your furnace is on it's own separate circuit.
Turning it down to 45 is a smart idea, and will probably suffice... but throwing the breaker removes all doubt.

I'll do it!
Ach. And it's only going to be zero tonight! :eyes:
On edit: Is this .... er .... gonna be expensive? :D

4. Maybe expensive, maybe not. |

It's just too VAGUE of a problem to diagnose via the internets. And furnaces have always been my nemesis, they seem to DEFY my widely-respected, MacGuyver-like ability to FIX things.
So I really can't help you with the furnace.
On the other hand, if you want my favorite 'secret recipes' for keeping your house at 60 degrees, I have a few helpful tips.

...and I've made a Learjet! :D
Fortunately, the house holds heat darned well. Plus between girlfriend, huskies, and down comforter I may indeed live to see the morning. :)

6. Well, if you have a GF, a down comforter, AND some huskies... |
|
...then maybe you just started this thread to BOAST about yer rock-star lifestyle?
Little DUers in China go to bed every night with no huskies at all!
All silliness aside, it sounds like you have it covered. Sleep tight, and call the furnace guy tomorrow. And if your GF gives birth to a son 9 months from now, can I recommend the name "Richard"?
