My dirty little secret: I liked Star Trek: The Motion Picture

I liked the Klingons, and their new language. I thought their new bony foreheads were cool. I liked the V'ger cloud. I liked the new enterprise, the new transporter system, and the new Danskin jumpsuits that everyone wore. I secretly thought 'it must suck to be fat in the 23rd century...' I thought the special effects were nifty. For the time, anyway. I liked Ilea. I thought she was hot. I liked the psychadelic, LSD-inspired voyage through the cloud, and the funky music in the background. I even bought the soundtrack, which was on 8-track, by the way (remember 8-tracks?).

I liked the big electric thing that invaded the bridge. I liked the new armor-plated outfits worn by the security guards. I liked the wormhole scene, and the new Red Alert effects. I liked Commander Decker giving Ilea a tour of the new Enterprise, and the game they played in the recreation area. The game for some reason reminded me of the Coneheads on Saturday Night Live. I liked Spock's sojourn to the heart of V'ger. I liked the poker-game style bluffing at the end of the movie. I really liked the fact that V'ger was actually Voyager 6, sucked into what they used to call a Black Hole. I thought that was way cool.

Okay, the ending was hideously lame, but overall, I liked it.

There. I said it. It's out in the open, and I feel better already.

1. I liked it too

Yeah, the story may have been corny, but for for the hardcore trekkies born from the original series, this first one was cool because it was the first time we had seen Star Trek updated with cool new effects and such. Release year was 1979 IIRC.

2. I remember seeing it in the theater...
Where I recall it being a loooong flick. I really thought it was cool then and still appreciate it. Good concept.
I too enjoyed the first Star Trek movie.

14. No CG and those effects were/are exceptional
I shouldn't say 'were', they still look very good today.

4. I was disappointed that they recycled a plot from the show
instead of coming up with something new.

PS - Edith Keeler must die.

7. My favorite is still the transition film to Generations...
http://www.homevideos.com/revnclas/27.htm

The basic story involves a Federation scientist, Dr. Tolian Soran, who threatens the existence of the universe in his attempt to return to a strange dimension, the Nexus, where everyone lives out their own dreams of paradise. In order to save the universe, two generations of "Trek" captains must unite to defeat him. "Star Trek Generations" features the long awaited meeting of legendary Enterprise captain's Kirk and Picard.

8. That one had a plot flaw the honked me off
The Doctor -- rahter than simply flying into the Nexus in a ship, goes to great trouble and expense to build a platform high into the air, but inexplicably not quite high enough to do the job. He then, gets some weapon that he plans to launch into the nearby sun in order to change the gravitational forces such that the nexus passes through his inexplicably short tower.

The fact that he just didn't go to Hertz rent-a-shuttle to get back into the nexis is bad enough. The inexplicably short tower is bad enough. But the idea that stopping fusion in a star is somehow going to make the mass/matter go away (which is necessary to change the gravitational forces) just pisses me off.

The invent a problem, ignore the easy solutions, then they invent technology that physically doesn't solve their problem. With all the technologies they could have invented that would have actually provided a solution to the gravitational problem, they chose one that would have no effect...

Add Piccard using a "Classic Manix Disarm," on the antagonist and Data getting emotions, despite episodical evidence that it would be a bad idea-- Well... ...I left extremely disappointed.

Don't get me started on the plot holes and random out-of-character experiences in "First Contact!"

15. LOL!
I like you already! :D

Or that Guinan's roots are exposed and the mystery uprooted comletely. x( El Aurians in the 23rd century. How could they get to Earth;'s solar system from their own so quickly after the Borg attack? How did the Feds know of their species in the first place? Later, Guinan tells Picard it's impossible to go back, yadda yadda. A few minutes later she flatly contradicts herself and tells the viewing audience that "once you go in, you won't want to come out".

Generations had some great ideas, but the execution wasn't that great. (the movie was also rushed as they just got done with the tv show too, so I can forgive them...) The tv show finale would have made a better movie... or perhaps we say that because "All Good Things" has a better feel to it, whereas "Generations" just feels like stock material.

Making the star prematurely nova would send shock waves to push the ribbon wasn't a bad idea, and Trek has ALWAYS ignored the laws of physics ("Nemesis" glaringly so). Though I'm no astrophysicist...

The collector's edition DVD had better be the theatrical cut we saw. The current home video has some chopped moments (namely the attack of the Enterprise and the crash of the saucer and an awesome camera bit where two crewmen go over Worf's panel in slow-motion...)

Yeah, "First Contact" was a big mess... it had, arguably, the best core idea (Picard facing the Borg again and having a mental breakdown) but was BADLY executed. Oh, badly... but I won't go there either. "Insurrection", obviously made to draw in new fans rather than catering to the fanboys, is a much more fluid and solid production than "First Contact". I still can't figure out why the fans hated it.

10. I like it, too!
I think it's a wonderful movie. It's not 100% trek-like in that it does move very slowly, and lots of time is giving to long camera shots, but they're beautiful shots . It's a very artistic film, IMO, and a fitting first trek movie.

11. The "reunion" aspect made it fun
WHo couldn't resist a good laugh when McCoy greets Spock for the first time in a decade and says "Well, Spock, I see you're just as warm and human as ever." And Spock's ever-so-subtle cocking of the eyebrow.

I felt the story could have been told in an our long episode, but they had to show you how cool the new enterprise was with all those lengthy shots. For a 12 year old raised on the reruns since very early childhood, that was worth it.

A friend of mine had the soundtrack on vinyl - but I do remember 8-tracks. Thought it was cool that TNG copped the theme for their show 8 years later.

13. I prefer the original to the new director's DVD version...
It was painfully long, but at least it was more fluid.

The DVD release cut short quite a few scenes and the whole thing had a choppy feel to it. (the new f/x were nice, but were they worth it?)

As a sci-fi movie, it rocks. But as Star Trek, it sinks. Treks 2-6 do better jobs at fleshing out the characters and are more character-driven. Even Trek 5 had its moments...

One nit though, the transporter accident (which is a scene I otherwise like and could only be done in a theatrical setting). Starfleet HQ was using their transporter beam to send the cremen, and note that people beam down to planets all the time without a transporter pad being present at the destination site. So how come two people die in transit?! Why did they need Enterprise's transport system? Surely not to TEST the thing out!!! Also, the DVD release doesn't have the extended transport accident scene as seen on the extended-length home video. Not many extra scenes helped out TMP, but that transporter one did.
